You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with the Cremation Society of Mid-Michigan. The staff were prompt, courteous, compassionate, capable, and caring. They are nothing like the review posted here by my step daughter,, Kellie Prowse. Due to the discretion of my privacy , dealing with this company, they were not authorized to comply with her wishes. It is my opinion as to why she left such a bad review for them. I would recommend highly this company to anyone needing their services”

“They will say that they have no record of doing business with you, so they can excuse the lack of empathy and professionalism this place has. Unless you are giving them a body to service, they will not contact you, so they have a 24 hour answering service, but its only for those that need a body picked up because they will not call you back when they open like the answering service says they will. They put their phone on BUSY ALL DAY during business hours so that they dont have to take any calls, then put it back on the answering service once the business closes for the day. They dont answer emails either. So I had to post on facebook seeing if anyone had a different number. The man was rude and couldnt answer my question thoroughly....I just got a "no you cant see your father" when desperately trying to see my father's body for one moment before cremated. I had to find out from another crematory owner that was kind enough to tell me that if the next of kin (the spouse in this situation) doesnt state it, then they wont allow it. This crematory couldnt be bothered to even kindly explain the laws? to me regarding this (if its a law?) And I was left hanging. In a time of death and grieving as a child of a father, I should not have been treated with such low respect just because im not the next of kin and wasnt paying the bill to their services. Its honestly disgusting the lack of professionalism and empathy in such a sensitive time in someone's life. *my photos clearly show this crematory is lying saying they answer the phone. They have time to reply to their reviews same day, but couldnt compassionately take the time to explain the next of kin law, instead I had to have another crematory explain it to me. They were short and rude and acted like they had no time. I would definitely never use their services because they have no compassion for families, whether they are the paying client or not.”

“Our family did not receive the care and service that was expected during this time. This business was contacted to handle a family member for a direct cremation. As the family we are waiting on the next step only to be notified a few days later they wouldn’t take the case. Not sure why as this was not communicated directly to the family but to the medical examiner. This place came highly recommended and as a funeral industry student they dropped the ball big time. Will not recommend for the lack of communication and professionalism that was displayed. No family should have been treated the way we were. It’s unacceptable on all levels. To refuse service is one thing but to refuse service without an explanation in this field is baffling.”
