You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When a loved one dies, the last thing you need to worry about are the details of taking care of your loved one's remains and planning services to honor the deceased. George at the Guilford Funeral Home quietly and efficiently walked me through the whole process in one visit. He knew the admin folks at the church and handled communication to ensure no details were forgotten. Even though my husband was being cremated, George had his body prepared for viewing so that I could say goodbye, and he held Jim's body for an extra day so my daughter flying in from Seattle could say goodbye to her father. I recommend the Guilford Funeral Home highly. It is a family business and has been part of the community for decades unlike many other funeral homes that are owned by investment companies.”

“We would like to thank the staff of the Guilford Funeral Home for helping us through the burial and funeral arrangements for our father. George answered all questions carefully and with patience to make us understand the process. The calling hours, prayer cards, coffin choices , church details , cemetery arrangements and death certificates were all taken care of. Tony was especially helpful during the calling hours and church procession. Florence has excellent phone etiquette and a pleasing tone to answer all questions. The inscribed Memory Book with prayers and verses honoring our father was more than we expected. We added pictures and keep that book close to us to always remember him. Thank you .”

“I cannot express how deeply disappointed we were with the service we received from Guilford Funeral Home. My mother-in-law was to bury her mother today with this business, surrounded by our friends and family as we said goodbye to a beautiful, strong woman who had done so much for us. All we wanted was to have a respectful service for her, to show honor to all that she had achieved in her lifetime. I am deeply disappointed to say that the owner of the funeral home, George Sullivan, thought that the appropriate time to accost my mother-in-law about payment for services due was on the day of the funeral itself. As the woman I admire so deeply was putting her mother to rest, this man was hounding her during the service demanding payment. This family is well established in Guilford, multiple generations worth; and to be treated this way is just disrespectful and cold-hearted. Multiple family members and friends witnessed this and were absolutely appalled at the disgusting behavior this man presented. I hear he is the owner of the company, and if this is true, I caution anyone looking to contract services from this business. To have the owner of this establishment cause a scene in the middle of this funeral was absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting behavior. The disrespect my mother-in-law experienced will forever be etched into this day in her memory. We paid a deposit, and had informed him that the insurance money was on the way, but there was a clerical error in the paperwork that was submitted. He demanded payment in full (almost $15,000) This man then saw fit to accost my mother-in-law in the middle of her mother's funeral service. I am absolutely appalled, disgusted, and disappointed in the behavior that we experienced from this business. I caution any families that are looking to have a memorable and respectful service to not use this funeral home. They will disrespect your dearly departed, and will ruin your experience as you try to say goodbye to your loved ones. George Sullivan your behavior was absolutely disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself and your business.”
