You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“During one of the most difficult chapters for our family, Eddie and the exceptional team at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home in West Roxbury provided a level of support that was truly beyond measure. Facilitating my uncle’s service in such an elegant and serene environment immediately removed the heavy burden of logistics from our shoulders, allowing us the space to grieve and honor his memory. What sets Eddie apart is his remarkable attention to detail and genuine flexibility. He and his staff were incredibly accommodating, going above and beyond to ensure every aspect of the service was handled with the utmost dignity. Most notably, they provided invaluable assistance in identifying cemetery options that strictly adhered to our religious beliefs, showing a deep respect for our family's traditions. I cannot recommend George F. Doherty & Sons highly enough for those seeking compassionate, professional, and seamless funeral care. Eddie, thank you for your kindness and for treating our family as if it were your own during this trying time." P.E. MURRAY-F.J. HIGGINS, GEORGE F. “I would like to give my personal compliments and thanks to Jack Doherty. When my father passed away this past November, me and my family immediately reached out to several funeral homes. Of all the people I spoke with, it was Jack who respectfully kept in constant contact while providing us with all the information we needed. At the cemetery, I remember seeing Jack quietly and professionally in the background, standing by and ready to assist if needed. Even that visual spoke volumes to me. Throughout the whole preparation and research, Mr. Doherty was never forceful and was never trying to control the situation. Me and family are forever grateful for Jack and what he did for us!”

“In this industry, there are two types of the funeral directors: the ones that give you the run around, where you're forced to ask for the "out the door" price, same as negotiating a car; then there is Eddie and his wonderful staff. I'll tell you why below: A) Staff: I spoke with Eddie several times before, during and after service. No matter how busy he is, he always makes time for you. And Eddie doesn't just text back, he makes time to call you and he does not rush you though it. I admire his patience and compassion that he offers to families, because Eddie does not end a call until he is convinced that he has explained everything to you, with attention to detail. He is very fair on the pricing of the service and on my experience, explained everything in detail regarding billing costs. He also follows up to update you on each and every step, throughout thee service. The rest of the gentlemen that make up the service staff on the day of, are pretty cordial and respectful as well. B) Funeral Service: The building is very beautiful inside and out. There are two rooms. One bigger, one smaller. I elected to book the smaller room. The embalmer had made mom look amazing laying on repose. While setting the features, they had ensured that she was looking calm and happy in her eternal sleep. I asked Eddie for something special that means a lot in the Albanian culture, grave site. I asked for a bit of earth set aside because we throw three fistful on top of the casket (since back on the home funeral traditions days when the head of household was in charge of the role of the funeral director and undertaker). I was pleased to find an entire 5 gallon bucket and a shovel waiting for me. This meant a lot to me and our relatives and friends. I am very satisfied with the service and the staff that I would recommend them again to relatives and friends, when their time of need comes.”
