You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Many thanks to Tia and everyone at Newcomer for working so hard for my family in planning my father's service. As circumstances changed, they were always able to pivot and adapt. They are such a caring and kind group of individuals, which was exactly what I needed during that very difficult week. Tia even called me on her day off to ask what she could do to help me. Thank you, thank you to everyone who made our services go so smoothly.”

“I have used New Comer Cremations & Funerals for the funeral services for my uncle and then both of my parents (2020, 2024 & 2025) and I can't recommend them enough. Reasonably priced, timely, considerate, and above all else — compassionate and willing to work with you to make their services so uniquely special. I'm a pretty unique person with a very unique family and I wanted to ensure each of my family members were honored accordingly. For their services, I was able to bring items from home to decorate my own memorial alongside their urns that were beautifully displayed with flowers and a picture, create expressive collages honoring their lives, have private viewings prior to the public services themselves, and even have a "birthday party" ceremony with cookies and balloons for my dad who passed away a week before his 65th birthday. They really do whatever you need them to, and that's incredible to me. Even amidst my grief, I found myself able to have a Celebration of Life for each of them rather than a cookie-cutter, traditional funeral and that made me so, so happy. I also absolutely loved our funeral director, Joanna (Jo). Like, adored her. She was patient, kind, considerate, helpful, and all around a fun person to work with. Now, I realize that people might not say that often about funeral directors, but she really was phenomenal. I appreciate her work and have found importance in it in ways many people may overlook. I hope more funeral directors show up like her for people in our community... It's obvious how much she valued caring for my loved ones after their passing. She took hand prints of both of my parents to give me in case I want to get them tattooed on me someday, kept me on track when my emotions would take over or my mind would wander, and made me feel like my parents were truly safe in her care. It's clear that she takes her job seriously and I'm grateful for that. She also showed up in the way the family needed emotionally and spiritually, and that in and of itself was a godsend. She wrote a lovely graveside service honoring my parents and their legacy, advocated for me when I ran into issues with my parents burial plot, and was warm as though we'd known each other for decades when things got hard during the planning process. Overall, I'm grateful for having someone who understood me and my family from beginning to end. 10/10 recommend New Comer Funerals and Cremations in Colonie, NY.”
