You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I have voiced my concerns multiple times about the landscaping! Unbelievable amount of branches and leaves that have clearly been laying there for months, as well as half dead trees that are literally splitting in half, the wire type fence that surrounds the place is leaning and warped and covered with dead vines! I frequently visit my grandmother's grave and only once have I seen the landscaping crew, not working, but just sitting on their cart...for a very long time, then just drove off. It infuriates me at how unkept/neglected this cemetery has become. Staff is full of excuses, non caring, and unapologetic.”

“San Jose Burial Park is a peaceful and well-maintained historic cemetery offering a quiet place for reflection and remembrance. The grounds are clean, organized, and respectfully preserved, with shaded areas and scenic paths. Its calm atmosphere and historical significance make it a meaningful place to visit, honor loved ones, or explore local history in a serene setting.”

“The cemetery is kept clean, the landscaper/matinenance crew clearly do their job with pride. Everytime I visit my father I complain to myself about the lack of grass and abundance of dirt or mud and rocks or pebbles, but I quickly remind myself the City never promised me a rose garden, nor the greens from Augusta. My father was buried in October 1990, his headstone hasn't moved an inch, it isn't sinking or falling down. I owe that to the wonderful individuals who take care of the land and the management team who make everything runs smooth.”
