You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Sweet Home Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements after my father passed away, and they took great care of every detail. They were very kind and unbelievably accommodating when services needed to be delayed due to the pandemic. Liz and Mac were always professional, thorough, and patient with us as they were organizing Dad's beautiful and moving Military Honors service. Thank you, everyone at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, for helping to give us memories of my dad that will last for generations.”

“My family and I were disappointed. At the viewing we were shocked to find a large amount of makeup on our loved ones face. While I understand the need for cosmetics when a viewing is being held to make the departed seems life-like, our loved one had a great deal of glamour makeup on. Peach blush, two-tone eye shadow, lipstick, mascara. This on a person who in her life never wore a stitch of makeup. We were shocked that an assumption of this size would be made without first contacting the family. It inhibited the grieving process at the home, during the viewing. I also took offense that her eyebrows had been manipulated and colored in, heavily. The end result of all this, along with some strange, bang-comb-over style hair-do resulted in a woman I, or my family, in no way recognized. The home did alter some of these things before the funeral the next day at our request. However, her heavy and re-shaped brows remained. There is no business that deals more in finality than the funeral industry, that in mind I find it shocking that they would roll the dice on such a personality defining look when doing our loved ones makeup. In the future I would ask that the person(s) doing hair and makeup ask the family directly how they would like the person to appear or ask for a photographic reference.”

“I went here to make a pre-paid funeral plan. I sat down with the funeral director or insurance sales man (whatever he was.) I told him, "I have Boarderline Personality Disorder and my sister doesn't want to pay for a funeral." He was trying not to laugh at the hint that I might kill myself. We had a good long conversation about what I want and what I can afford. We looked at urns. He put me on a 10 year payment plan and walked me across the street to the bank to get my checking account number. A couple weeks later I did the math and figured out that in 10 years I was going to pay a thousand dollars more than what I agreed to pay. I called the insurance company and they told me, "That's why we don't recommend that people choose the 10 year payment plan because it does cost more." I said, "He didn't tell me that." They said, "He should of told you that." We had to change my plan to a 5 year plan and increase my monthly payments. If you go to this funeral home to make a funeral plan, take a calculator with you and a social worker or someone to watch out for you.”
