You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I’m heartbroken and deeply disappointed by how Sellars Funeral Home and Mount Juliet Memorial Gardens handled their recent “clean-up” of the cemetery. I visited my mother’s grave this evening to find that everything had been removed — flowers, decorations, and personal items that meant so much to my family — all gone without warning. I understand that there are rules about what can be placed at grave sites, but the way this was done was cold and careless. Items were tossed into trash bags, broken, and discarded as if they held no meaning. There was no notice, no opportunity to retrieve belongings, and no compassion shown to the families still grieving their loved ones. Visiting a loved one’s grave should bring peace, not pain. What happened here was deeply disrespectful. Families deserve communication, empathy, and a chance to honor their loved ones without having their grief made worse. I expected better from a business that’s supposed to serve the grieving with dignity.”

“Sellars was very compassionate during the hardest time of our lives. They treated us with dignity, love, respect, kindness, and treated us like family. Kimberly took great care of us and they honored my sweet son the best I could have asked. We sure do miss our boy Kyler. He is a one of a kind young man and this world was robbed of him. Thank you to all the staff that cared for my sweet boy and us. We are grateful for your compassion.”
