You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I was deeply disappointed with some of the services provided by Carter Funeral Home. When my loved one passed, we called them during their business hours to pick up the body, but they did not answer. It took almost two hours for another company to answer on their behalf, which was incredibly frustrating during an already difficult time. Additionally, I specifically requested a natural look for my loved one and even provided the foundation and lipstick I wanted her to wear. Instead, I found that they applied makeup to her brows, cheeks, and eyelids—completely disregarding my request. This was heartbreaking, as I wanted her to look like herself. On the day of the celebration of life, I had to call to get an ETA because it was 10 minutes before the viewing and our loved one still had not arrived to the church, people were waiting and had to see them set everything up when this should had been done prior. Another issue was the Facebook post they made for my loved one. Unlike other families who had a nice write-up and a photo posted, my loved one’s post had no picture at all. This felt inconsiderate and impersonal. Lastly, I was very unhappy with the constant pressure about payments. We paid a large portion of the balance the day after the celebration of life and informed the owner that the remaining balance would be covered once the insurance money was received. The owner had no concerns she knew we were true to our word. Despite this, we received numerous calls and voicemails that did not feel genuine, but rather like harassment over the remaining balance. During such an emotional time, families deserve compassion, attentiveness, and respect. Unfortunately, Carter Funeral Home did not meet these expectations.”

“Mrs. Carter, her son James Carter and their wonderful staff was excellent during my family's difficult time of my daughter's passing. They ensure that our needs were met. Mrs. Carter listened to me as I explained to her that its important that the services represent my daughter as she lived her life and she must look like her self. Mrs. Carter did exactly that!!!! My daughter looked like herself. I can't thank Mrs. Carter, Mr. James Carter and the staff enough. Thank you for being there for my family and I.”
