You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Compassionate, Personalized Care During a Difficult Time Losing my father was one of the most painful experiences of my life, and I will forever be grateful to John DeMers and Foothills Cremation and Funeral Service for the way they walked beside us through it. From the first phone call to the final moments of his cremation, their team offered not just professionalism, but genuine compassion and sensitivity. They took the time to understand who my father was—not just as a name on a file, but as a man with stories, values, and a legacy worth honoring. Every detail was handled with grace and respect, from the personalized touches in the memorial materials to the quiet dignity of the cremation process itself. I never felt rushed or overlooked; instead, I felt supported, heard, and cared for. In a world where services can sometimes feel impersonal, Foothills Cremation and Funeral Service reminded me that kindness and humanity still matter. Their thoughtful guidance helped transform a time of sorrow into a moment of reflection and peace. I would recommend them without hesitation to anyone seeking a funeral service that truly honors both the departed and the grieving.”

“I’ve been working with John DeMers, the owner and Funeral Director of Foothills Cremation and Funeral Service since my husband passed away in April 2023. The Denver Hospice provided us with a list of funeral homes in the Denver Metro area a few days before my husband passed. We reached out to several funeral homes and after speaking to each of them we decided to go with John DeMers of Foothills Cremation and Funeral Service. I’m so glad we chose John. You will not find a more kind, compassionate, caring individual to guide you through the very difficult process of losing a loved one. This was a first for me as I have never had to deal with a loss like this. A lot of decisions had to be made and John was there every step of the way to assist me and my family. I was concerned about funeral homes trying to up sell services but when we told John we wanted a simple cremation, and we would be providing our own urn he never once questioned our decision or tried to sell us additional services unless we asked for more options. I was able to post my husband’s obituary and many pictures on the funeral home website. I’m up to 378 pictures on the website which is a nice feature. Here we are four months after my husband’s passing and I’m getting ready to post more pictures of his Life Celebration which we had on August 6th. John worked with me to plan and execute the Life Celebration which I decided to do after having such a positive experience working with John after my husband passed. John helped me create the Memorial cards, suggested a beautiful venue, a wonderful florist in Castle Rock and an amazing caterer because we decided to provide lunch at the celebration. I wanted everything to be just perfect so I must have e-mailed John at least 100 times with questions, changes to the Memorial card, and timelines for the celebration. We just had the Life Celebration on August 6th and we knocked it out of the park thanks to John who was there for the event assisting with guests and doing whatever he could to help. I received so many texts and e-mails from guests after the Life Celebration telling me how beautiful it was. One of my friends lost her father last summer and she’s trying to get his ashes back to Germany so he can be buried in the family grave but she’s running into roadblocks with the German government. I sent John a quick e-mail asking him if he had any experience with the process. He responded with a several paragraph e-mail with so many details to assist my friend and she’s not even a client of his. But that’s John, always willing to help. I should mention Foothills pricing is quite resonable. I didn't run into any hidden charges and I found Foothills was significantly less expensive than many of the funeral homes we looked at. Some funeral homes were almost double the cost for a simple cremation. The other thing I really like about John is his responsiveness. You send him an e-mail and you get a response immediately or within an hour or so and that includes weekends. I don’t think he ever takes a day off. I highly recommend John DeMers and Foothills Funeral Service located in Castle Rock and Golden, Colorado. We used the Castle Rock location. He was so kind and caring with me and my children when we lost my husband and their father.”
