You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“They will not work with you to find options within your budget nor will they treat you as they would want their family treated. My father passed and I called this funeral home because my father had used when my mother passed. Very nice until Cameron found out finances are an issue as $2900 for direct cremation was too much for me. He promptly said there are no payment plans and that he had never been asked that question and gave me the names of two other less expensive funeral homes and told me that they would charge $45 a day for refrigerator until my father could be picked up Embarrassed, mentally exhausted and worried to death about how to pay for everything I called another funeral home that my friend suggested. Right from the start the vibe was completely different. These people were kind compassionate and treated me like family and gave me the reassurance everything was going to be okay. That same day they tried to pick my father up and because they were caught in traffic, whoever they were on the phone with said they would not wait, that they close at 5. They had to go back the next day where they were treated unkindly and charged much more than the $45 a day that was sent in an email for refrigeration fees, over $500. The refrigeration fees were not supposed to start until this past Monday. They came on Wednesday. In already a terrible time in life, this entire situation made everything so much worse. Last but not least my father’s obituary was incorrect. I was wondering how there was an obituary when no one asked me any questions and if my daughter had been asked, they would have had the accurate information. My father has two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. All around awful experience for me.”

“After a sudden death in the family, the care and compassion shown by Andy and the staff at Heritage was everything you could ask for during such an awful time. I don’t write reviews often but I needed to publicly acknowledge how carefully our needs were handled. All of our questions were answered with patience and understanding. The price was fair, compassionately discussed and transparent throughout the entire process. Our feelings of grief were always put first in every step. I feel good knowing my loved one was treated with dignity and care by people who didn’t even know him. Thank you Andy and the staff at Heritage.”

“Andy and the entire staff at Heritage Funeral Home did a fantastic job assisting my family with my father's funeral. Andy walked us through the many decisions and details that our family faced with great skill, compassion and sensitivity. He must have said 100 times "This is about what you want, and we will make what you want happen." And that proved to be so very true. He even walked us through some last minute changes right before the service and helped guide us to the correct decision. He then saw to it that it was executed as if it had been planned all along. And their facility is fantastic. It is beautiful, spacious and flexible. I don't think we could be a better facility. But of course it all comes down to the service. The team at Heritage took care of every detail. The service was exactly what we had hoped for. My family and I are most grateful for all that Andy Byrd and the team at Heritage did for our family. I couldn't recommend them more highly.”
