You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am absolutely horrified over the way my mother was put out for family and friends to say goodbye to I'm only thankful it was a private showing just for family and close friends due to the way the casket they laid her in looked and by the way they made her look. I couldn't wait to see her again and say goodbye to her until I got there. When I walked in and viewed her all I could do was cry and then I just wanted to leave. Her hair was messed up her lips were crooked and it looked like stitches were in them- it looked like something was in her neck poking through her skin and she was a complete ice cube. MY MOTHER DESERVED BETTER THAN THAT!!!!! As for her makeshift casket they had a sheet draped over the head part of it that was crooked beyond measure. I mean they could have at least folded it straight but they did not and left it the way they threw it over. Then they were nice enough to cover her with what looked like a hotel comforter that laid on the floor at the foot of the cabinet they laid her on. My mom would have went the extra mile to make sure somebody looked decent for their family to come and view and the least those people could have done considering they claim to care so much about people that have died that are trusted in their hands is prove it....I've heard two different employees say this to me but that day I seen the complete opposite. Back in 2019 I had them cremate my dog Buster and they told me it would take no more than 72 hours and it ended up being 3 weeks. Buster was a Chihuahua... the smallest dog in the world took them 3 weeks to cremate??? Yeah something's not right there!! It makes me wonder if they lost his ashes or lost track of him therefore I got somebody else's ashes... But as for my mother I feel so bad and I feel like not only did she suffer before she died but she suffered after because of that. My mom cared about what she looked like and she took care of herself way better than what they did. When I die I don't want to go there. If I do I hope I get somebody that cares about me as much as possible or at least as much as they say they care about people 🥺”

“There is never a good time to lose your mother... so you don't call this team of people when things are well and all is happy. I hadn't considered that. However, in my research, I found they were more reasonably priced than the competition around us and I wanted to call. Upon speaking with Brian, he put me totally at ease there are no corners cut, no nothing. Brian was great through the whole process. When it was time to come get my mother, they were here promptly and professionally. Absolutely class acts. Brian has followed up with me often and even did something special to accomplish one of my mother's final wishes. I'd prefer we didn't have to meet this way, but I'm extremely grateful we did. They aren't just good at their position... they are also kind people doing hard things. Thank you so so much.”

“We could not have been more pleased with the care and compassion that Northern Indiana Funeral Care provided to us. At such a difficult time they were able to help us navigate the process and had staff available to us during the visitation, the funeral and afterwards when we had questions. My mom passed after a long battle with dementia and she looked so beautiful and it was such a blessing to have our finals memories of her like that. My family would highly recommend them to anyone that is in need of funeral care. Brain and Sue should be given 10 STARS.”
