You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When my family faced the loss of my uncle, we were fortunate to have this funeral home guide us through the cremation process with grace and kindness. From the very first phone call, Dawn & Brian were attentive, patient, and deeply respectful of our wishes. They handled every detail with quiet professionalism, allowing us to focus on honoring his memory without added stress. What stood out most was their genuine compassion. They didn’t treat us like just another client—they treated us like family. The atmosphere was peaceful, the staff were gentle and reassuring, and every step was explained with clarity and care. It’s rare to find a business that blends efficiency with such heartfelt service. We are truly grateful for the way they honored my uncle and supported us during a difficult time. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking thoughtful, dignified care for their loved one”

“Unacceptable lack of professionalism, accountability, and basic competence from Sullivan Funeral Home in Hillside. I am the daughter of the deceased, and I never received my mother’s death certificate, a critical legal document that this funeral home was responsible for providing. When I called a few days ago, I spoke with Brian, who stated he would return my call. He failed to do so. When I called again, Brian offered a brief apology, stated he was “busy with a family,” and transferred the call to Dawn. Dawn’s conduct was rude, dismissive, and entirely unprofessional. She had incorrect information on file, including my mother’s name and my address, and instead of correcting these errors with care and professionalism, she became curt, rushed, and defensive. She repeatedly stated, “I’m doing the best I can,” while behaving as though my call was an inconvenience and implying she had more important matters to attend to. For the record, I remained calm, respectful, and polite until her tone and behavior became inappropriate. Requesting a legally required document that was never provided is not unreasonable, nor is it something a funeral home should mishandle in the first place. The level of disorganization, failure to follow through, and lack of compassion displayed here is indefensible — particularly given the substantial fees paid for their services. Funeral homes occupy a position of trust during the most difficult moments in a family’s life. Sullivan Funeral Home failed that responsibility entirely. This experience reflects systemic negligence and a troubling absence of professionalism. I would strongly caution any family considering this establishment to reconsider before entrusting them with matters of such importance”

“I cannot recommend Sullivan Funeral Home highly enough. Walking in I was completely overcome with dread due to very fresh grief and not knowing what the experience was going to be like. But as soon as we were greeted, I felt my anxiety ebbing away. The staff is so lovely and gentle, and were very open and honest with us with all our questions. They gave us space and time while working with us to figure things out. The home is peaceful and calming. Brian is amazing and I feel so grateful that we have had his assistance during this process. Thank you very much for your help and guidance.”
