You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My mother passed away on March 18th. Both my brother and I live out of state and met with Dale the very same day. He was absolutely WONDERFUL in helping us put together a service for her at the last minute. He was incredibly sensitive, thoughtful and caring during a VERY difficult time. He is also very knowledgeable in what is usually needed for LDS church member when they pass. We are SO appreciative of everything Dale did for us and would definitely recommend his services. Thank you very much!”

“Thank you Affordable Funerals & Cremations for helping my family with an amazing celebration of my father's life. He passed somewhat unexpectedly, but Morgan did a wonderful job of working with us quickly on every detail of the funeral and took great care in the details. He really listened to our wishes and accomdated all our requests from the moment I called him in the early hours of his Saturday morning upon my father's passing, until the moment my father was buried. We'll always be greatful for Morgan's professionalism during a difficult time for my mother, siblings, family and friends. We are greatful for the service that was provided. -Shad McPheters”

“We prepaid and had everything set for my mother's funeral through a mortuary in Salt Lake. Because my mother was living in Saint George when she passed, that mortuary had a contract with Affordable Funerals in Saint George to pick up my mother's body and hold it until they could pick her up. On the morning of her passing, we contacted the mortuary in Salt Lake, who then told us that someone from Affordable Funerals would be at the home within the hour to get my mother. ONE woman came alone, in a minivan with the seats out of the back. She was dressed unprofessionally. She was then VERY upset that I wouldn't sign a paper to pay for the service. I explained that we had already prepaid the entire funeral and that the mortuary had contacted them. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. Things only got WORSE. She brought in a very wobbly gurney and attempted to move my mom BY HERSELF from the hospital bed to the gurney. She literally DROPPED my mom -- in front of our family! My brother jumped up to help catch my mother before she hit the ground. The employee then proceeded to wrap my mother in a plastic body bag.... VERY AGGRESSIVELY as though she were wrapping up a piece of meat. She was about to zip up the plastic over my mom's face in front of us -- when the HOSPICE NURSE told her to STOP. I asked the woman to please wait to finish wrapping her up outside . The hospice nurse then went outside with the employee from Affordable Funerals to help load my mother into the van. The hospice nurse returned inside and told me she was "glad I had not witnessed that!" Later that day... neighbors came over to tell me that had watched the woman ROLL my mom into the back of a van! It was literally a HORRIBLE experience. This woman was extremely rude, cold, unprofessional, and showed absolutely no respect for my mother or our family. The hospice nurse told me that in her 20 years as a hospice nurse she had never experienced anything like that. In addition, our private caretaker, who has attended more than 15 deaths, was to the point of tears and stated that this was different than any other death she had attended. I would avoid this company like the plague.”
