You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Bennie Smith Funeral home provided exceptional services for my father’s viewing and Celebration of Life. Candace Simpson was our funeral director and was on top of every single detail from the beginning to the end. She offered not only professional advice and expertise, but emotional comfort and support as well to my family and I during the most challenging season of our lives. Everything was so masterfully done with excellence, from the preparation of the body, the casket selection, the flower arrangements, the programs, the pictures, the video montage with music, the professionalism and love shown by the entire staff during the Celebration of Life, to the internment. The communication that we received as a family throughout the planning process was amazing as well as feeling seen, important and included in the planning process. The staff of Bennie Smith Funeral Home made us feel like we were the only family they were servicing and they did all that they could to lighten the load that we were carrying during this time of our bereavement. I highly recommend Bennie Smith Funeral Home to any family in need of funeral services. Thank you again Candace Simpson and the entire staff for providing us with a Celebration of Life for my father that was done with excellence and providing us the opportunity to send him “Home” well. May God continue to bless you and keep you all, may his face shine upon you, may he be gracious to you and give you peace.”

“Bennie Smith Funeral Home made a very difficult time more difficult… Our funeral director Mr Reginald Hughes is either VERY forgetful or he doesn’t care… Mr Terry Nichols took our information down as Mr Hughes was busy doing another funeral/interment that day. Mr Nichols and my family set a time table to get things done during this very difficult time. Our family delivered the items as set in our first meeting with Mr Nichols to Mr Hughes a full week ahead of the funeral day… These items included all the items required for the program (eulogy, names, dates, etc) the program choice and music to be played during funeral day. The day before the funeral, Mr Hughes called me asking for the program choice and the information I have already provided… And also asked me if I have received a program draft to review. At the last minute, the program I received to review required a lot of work. The day of the funeral, the music I provided to Mr Hughes was not ready to go. I had to remind him there was music to be played. The grave markers I ordered and payed for, were not delivered to the grave the day of internment. In fact, it took Mr Hughes 6 days and five different reminders from me to deliver the marker. ONLY when I threatened I would seek a refund for the marker, Mr Hughes delivered. Additionally, the death certificates were wrong and had to be corrected. This was a difficult experience that was made worse. Although polite, Mr Hughes acted like we owed him something for his services when in fact he should have been expediently delivering the products and services my family paid for.”
