You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“The staff at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope ensured that the funeral for my stepmother was dignified and as stress-free as they could make it. We purchased a pre-need contract with them several years ago which made it easier when the time came. From the initial meeting with general manager Gary Sims to the celebration of life service directed by Gorden Wade and Crystal Leiterman, they answered our every need and guided us through the process. Even the office manager Laura and the pianist Anya went out of their way to help. Many thanks to all of the staff for their compassion and dedication in taking care of our family.”

“My mother recently passed and the customer service we received was beyond amazing! The pre-arrangements made in 2022 were flawless. Mark kept me apprised of every detail. I am thankful for the compassionate support they provided during a very difficult time.”

“Absolutely one of the worst experiences I have ever had! Tina sat down with my stepmother, sister, and myself and wrote down everything she was going to do for my father's funeral. Not one thing was done right! We had to wait a year and a half for the wake and memorial service because of covid. We were told that Tina was going to send us a link so that we could send in pictures for a slide show. My step mother received the link four days after the service! We reserved the parlor to greet friends and family. When we arrived at the funeral home, the poor man who got stuck dealing with our family had no clue what was going on. He tried to get us to hold the wake in the chapel! One of our friends called the funeral home to verify the time of the service and they told her there was no service the day we had it. But the item that upsets me the most is the fact that my father's obituary was not posted in any of the newspapers as requested! We cannot have another wake and memorial for my father. This used to be a reputable family owned business. I would not wish these people on anyone! I thought the owners were long time family friends! I would hate to see how they treat their enemies! Do not use this funeral home! An embarrassment to their profession!”
