You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I don't appreciate the way my family was treated. Just because someone doesn't spend thousands of dollars doesn't mean you treat them any kinda way. The way my brother was president wasn't right. We were told he would be presentable he wasn't. I wouldn't send a dead stray cat to them. My mother paid them for a death certificate never got it or a call back. I will never use this funeral home again. They don't care about service they care about money. If I got to a restaurant and order off of a value menu I don't get treated differently if I order a combo meal. So I would expect more from a funeral home treating people like they are less then.”

“On behalf of the Martin / Peppers family , Oh how WE thank you. Janae is truly one of God's Angels. Without her love , compassion ,guidance and sweet spirit I would have not been able to carry this first time experience through. My mother Eva would have been pleased with the professionalism of Mr. Coleman and his staff. I'm hoping that we will see each other again on different terms. We LOVE and appreciate you all. Mr Peterson, Mr.Battle and those behind the scenes, Thank You ! I Love you so much.”

“This was the worse experience I’ve ever had with a funeral home. I was there for the home going of my cousin and uncle, a double funeral. Prior to the start of the funeral I asked one of the officiant (Coleman) where was the family and pallbearers seats at which time he said “sit any where”. My past experience with funeral homes is that the family and pallbearers always had designated areas to sit. Lastly, after arriving at the cemetery, Coleman instructs others that weren’t designated as pallbearers to come and carry my uncle. At this point I had had enough of his lack of professionalism and asked him what was wrong with him we are here to carry my uncle. I could say more but I will park it here and leave you with this; I don’t care if they are the only black funeral home in Lima, if you’re not receiving the service you deserve, allow the competitors to earn your business.”
