You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“If I could give 0 stars I would. Andrews Funeral Home has strung out my family and I for nearly 5 YEARS for the creation and placement of a simple gravestone for my father who passed away in early 2021 and then for my mother who passed away in mid-2025. I am not local so I can only communicate with them via email and phone and they often simply ignore emails and don't return phone calls. I was also lied to by Mr. Andrews who told me last August (2025) that my father's stone had been engraved and placed and that he would send a photo of it to me. He never sent a photo and I only learned within the last week from the church where my father is buried that he still doesn't have a stone. I reported Andrews Funeral Home to the Better Business Bureau of Hampton Roads and also to the Virginia state department that licenses funeral homes and funeral directors. Andrews Funeral Home should not be in business if they can't create a simple gravestone and lie to their customers. I have seen quite a few reviews on Yelp and Google with same complaint. I hope others see this and the other reviews before doing any business with Andrews Funeral Home.”

“IF I COULD GIVE NEGATIVE STARS, I WOULD!!!!! Our family lost our beloved granddad last September. We went to Andrew's Funeral Home to get his headstone because they have taken care of my family for over 60 years. When we ordered everything, there were several mistakes on the original form which was corrected before we left. The funeral home advised that since the headstone is coming from the VA it will 4 to 6 months. Fast forward 6 months, we contacted the home and they said they are still waiting on the VA. Fastfoward to August 2025, my mom went to the funeral home to speak to them about the delay. The guy just shrugged his shoulders and said he had no records, he said he sent the originals back in August or September of last year which is impossible because we didnt bury him until end of October 2024. He never apologized or took accountability for their sloppy work and disrespect to my Granddad and my family. Im absolutely disgusted with this company and they should be ashamed of how they run this business.... during times of loss, people should be shown kindness and compassion. For some, this is the hardest thing to go through and no one should have to worry about a funeral home not doing what was ordered and discussed. He should really get out of this line of business. His dad wouldn't have allowed this kind of mistake or lack of compassion. SHAME ON YOU!”

“Called many times since October 2024 to check on an order for a headstone for father-in-law. Spoke with Mr. Andrews each time. Was informed, no word yet, no update from VA on time frame, but he would call once received. We wanted to be there for installation. Drove out from Arizona to visit family. Visted Andrews Funeral home to check on order. Left a message for Mr. Andrews to call us back. No call back. Went back to funeral home, spoke to Mr. Andrews. Was told order still pending stone from quarry. He'll follow-up and call us with update. No call back, again. Visited Mr. Andrews and he stated he's left messages with VA. We asked him for the work order so we could support the efforts of the missing headstone. Possibly make calls on our end. He went get paperwork and brought back nothing. Find out he had no paperwork. No apology. No action was suggested to fix situation. Just a shoulder shrug with upturned hands. No, I'm sorry, or, hey let's get this fixed. Nothing. Very disrespectful to my wife's father, his family, and our family back in Arizona. Father in law has been resting peacefully for 10 months without a headstone. How sad. My wife and I we're treated very dishonesty and disrespectfully. We located another facility and called the VA for an update on order. Was told no order was ever placed. I believe a simple apology and/ or let's fix this situation might have defused the tension. Never happened. Glad we do not have talk to him again. Tired of being lied too.”
