You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Death sucks. But it's a part of life. After experiencing hurricane Helene, 21 days they kept my loved one. At times I became worried because of unpreventable circumstances due to the hurricane such as long and ongoing power outages that lasted for at least 7 days. Everyone knows the cooler plays a vital part along with embalming in slowing the deterioration of remains. I WAS TOLD BY STAFF WHICH I WILL NOT NAME with a witness to prove (THEY HAD NOT HAD A GENERATOR during that power outage and that's when my anxiety kicked in because again without any means of electricity- those coolers aren't functioning. Many contradict what the staff member had to say, saying they had a way to get electricity to the cooler, but not other areas.) All in all- this was my grandmother we talking about and she was still both beautiful and recognizable. WATKINS&GARRETT IS EXPENSIVE. They prices are astronomical. Gouged. With that being said, customers want to get what they pay for. Some funerals will cost 8k whereas others will cost 17k. And perhaps more. Especially when you start to add all the miscellaneous fees for additional services that are offered. It costs to die. Either way- GET SOME GENERATORS. Too popular and highfalutin to not have it all figured out. My rating is simple. From 1 being the worst to 3 being the best. Professionalism- 2 (shout out to Tyrone, he understands mourning is vital) Cleanliness-3 Pricing- 2 Organization- 1 (Berry a sweet man but be losing jewelry AND HOW DO YOU MISSPELL NAMES IN THE PROGRAMS. ESPECIALLY IF IT'S THE SAME NAME BEING REPEATED. JUST COPY AND PASTE. There's keyboard shortcuts I tell you ctrl+c/p. Reviewed the program countless times and still couldn't get it right. You charge too much to be disorganized. Being both popular and prestigious comes with expectations.) Recommend or not recommend Note: "Recommend" -Alma Sullivan grand baby.”

“Doug Garrett, one of the directors, helped me and my family at a time when we were in total shock from the death of my Mother. While my Mother lived with me in Greenville her cremation services were all arranged in Michigan. Doug and his staff were easily accessible by the funeral home in Michigan and so kind and considerate. I asked Doug if he could quickly arrange a small showing for some family members who were out of town when my Mom passed away. Doug did not hesitate and made it happen. He personally assisted me and my family members. Doug and the staff of Watkins, Garrett and Woods are so kind and attentive. I can't recommend this place enough.”

“The Brown family extends our most heart-felt gratitude shown to our family during the death of our brother. The care shown to our family was exceptional. We thank you for transporting our loved one back to our home state of Alabama. We will be forever grateful to this wonderful staff of professionals.”
