You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I wish there was a way to leave negative stars. My grandpa passed away 3 months on 10/4. Mind you he was 91 and had already pre planned his funeral and picked out his headstone back in 1992. There was an issue that happened and was settled a few days after he passed. April advised that it would be between 30 to 40 days that his headstone would be out and that it was already pulled from the warehouse. My mom has been the one that has been continuously calling and making sure everything is in order. When she called this morning she was informed that April in fact lied or dropped the ball once again we have to wait. By the time that his headstone is up he would be gone for half a year. This is absolutely ridiculous and no one is offering any type of sympathy or accountability and of course April is never there when my mom calls to check on the status. This is horrible way to treat a family that is still grieving and would love to go visit but doesn’t want to visit a grave with no headstone.”

“If I could leave negative stars I would. I am writing to share my deeply disappointing and frustrating experience with a so-called "local" funeral home, which I later discovered is actually owned and operated by a corporate office based in Florida. As someone grieving the recent loss of my father, I expected compassion, professionalism, and transparency from a funeral service provider. Instead, I encountered practices and behaviors that added unnecessary stress and frustration during an already difficult time. First and foremost, I was shocked to discover that this funeral home physically writes down customers’ credit card information on paper to process payments. This practice is not only outdated but raises serious concerns about data security. After running the payment, they claim to black out the information on the paper—but who does this in an era where secure digital payment systems are the norm? Additionally, they transported my father’s body to their crematory without obtaining a next-of-kin signature. This lack of proper authorization is both unprofessional and deeply unsettling. When we inquired about purchasing a plot and headstone, we were initially quoted an exorbitant price. After deciding to explore other options, we suddenly received a revised quote that was $1,300 lower than the original amount. This last-minute price drop felt like an attempt to manipulate us into staying with their services, and it further eroded our trust in their business practices. The worst part of this entire ordeal has been the battle to get a refund of our $1,000 deposit. We requested the refund on November 14th, and as of today, December 5th, we are still waiting. Despite multiple follow-up phone calls, we have yet to receive any clear answers about when the refund will be processed. It’s important to note that we did not sign any contracts to move forward with the plot or headstone, making the delay even more unacceptable. This experience has been a nightmare during a time when my family should be focused on mourning and celebrating the life of our loved one. I hope my story serves as a warning to others to thoroughly research funeral homes and ask the hard questions before committing to their services. To the funeral home in question: I urge you to reevaluate your business practices and prioritize the dignity and well-being of grieving families. No one should have to endure the kind of distress and frustration that my family and I have experienced.”
