You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I highly recommend Honan Funeral Home. Dan and Mark treated me and my family with sincere kindness and guided us through planning my precious family members’ funeral. Dan and Mark are truly angels. From the moment Dan answered the phone through the conclusion of our service, everyone we interacted with was kind, helpful and respectful. The funeral was beautiful, and the layout of the funeral home was lovely and we were able to customize the space to make special details to honor my family member. Dan Honan and Mark Frederick helped to ease our sadness by providing a beautiful flawless service to honor our loved one.”

“I highly recommend Honan Funeral Home. We worked with Dan, who was so kind and considerate throughout the entire process. We lost my father, and neither myself, my mom or my brother had any experience in planning a cremation and funeral. Dan explained everything to us, and told us exactly what he needed from us, which honestly was very little because he took care of all of it. We didn’t have to worry about doing anything before, during or after the mass on the day of the funeral. We were able to focus on saying goodbye to my dad. So many times, when we asked him about what we needed to do at a certain point, such as setting the date at St. Rose, or collecting cards from flower arrangements so we knew who to thank, he said “we take care of that” and they did. They were so patient and kind, and we all really appreciate what they did for our family at such a difficult time.”

“When I went to Honan’s to pick up my husband’s ashes, they almost gave me the wrong cremains. I knew right away because I had purchased a heavy urn and the bag they were trying to give me was light as a feather. Additionally his name (spelled incorrectly) was written on the correct package, but Mr. Honan didn’t bother to look at the name on the box. Of equal incompetence - my husband’s death certificate had 3 typos on it - including DOB… seriously. I was not pleased with the lack of care and detail given to me and especially my husband, who deserves better.”
