You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Unfortunately to write a review it’s making me select a star if I had a choice it would be zero. This place was completely unprofessional. From withholding information for family to be able to send flowers and know about service times to literally keeping family members out of the services. Went to Salas brothers for my husband’s great grandmother and was told it was a private event even though we called ahead and was informed that it was not a private event and open to the public. We requested the person in charge to talk to but apparently he was too busy. Thankfully my sister called the Modesto police department and they were able to make away for us to pay our respects to our loved one. The fact that no one came out to handle the situation and had other family members be negative and try to keep people out was sad. When you lose someone you should be allowed to say bye and pay your respects and unfortunately with this place you won’t be able to.”

“This was an absolute nightmare. I know people only post reviews when they are bad but I actually post positive ones, however this is NOT a good one. Like having a death in the family isnt enough, they made this process way more difficult! We were called and told that our loved one didnt fit in the 2 urns we provided even though that seemed impossible as tiny as she was. We were called and asked if we wanted all of her. That right there was horrible. We were then told we needed to pay for a box for the extra ashes and we agreed. Then they said we also had to pay more for another certificate which we agreed to. We also were told it would take a few days longer to claim the ashes because they had to file the additional certificate. A few days later we were called and asked if we wanted the urns sealed and we said yes. However, we said yes because we know there was the additional box that didnt fit that we could use to put in our necklaces and to a few close friends of hers. We had a friend of the family pick them up because we lived out of state and would get them prior to the service. The day before the service when we received the ashes, there were only the 2 urns we provided. We caled Salas Brothers and were told we would need to wait until they were open Monday which would be AFTER the service. We showed up Monday and it was so horrific. They denied everything. They said what we were charged was for the 2 urns we provided was just for those. That means the $2400 we were charged didn't include the fees to fill the provided urns? They claimed they said "if" she doesnt fit. They ABSOLUTELY said SHE DIDNT FIT. They charged us for a box and another certificate that we never received. This isnt about the money. Its about not giving us ALL of our loved one and then not owning there crap and stating that WE misunderstood. We have a copy of the extra $74 charge which was the amount for the box and additional certificate which they are telling us was for the 2 we provided that were included in the $2400. I cant explain the thought of knowing we didnt get all of our loved one. The wasted money is just irritating. The knowledge that they disposed a portion of our loved one is devastating. PLEASE save yourself the heartache when you are already hurting from your loss and stay away from this company. They charge more than any other funeral home in Modesto and on top of it they lie and discard precious ashes. Thank you”

“You know I don't even want to give this funeral home one star but I had to push one just so I can make this review anybody who's thinking about using this funeral home parlor I would give that a second thought see my grandma was in their funeral home and they held my grandmother's body for 2 years before we were nosed and notified she was so decayed rotted and mold was on her that they couldn't identify her so we had to do a DNA test we were able to finally move our Grandma to a different home to where they could cremate her and put her to rest finally you want to talk about the amount of pain stress and just overall agony my family felt is unreal this funeral home parlor should be ashamed of themselves for the inhumane that they have showed my family. Matter of fact I think they should just shut their doors as we speak it was that bad anyways just thought I'd put that out there.”
