You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.
If your loved one had a life insurance policy, the benefit can cover these costs — and we'll file the claim and handle the carrier for you, even without the policy number. $0 upfront, and nothing if it doesn't pay out.
“I cannot express enough gratitude to for the care, compassion, and professionalism they showed during such a difficult time. From the first call to the final service, the staff was incredibly supportive, respectful, and attentive to every detail. On site manager Ron, did very commendable work. They handled everything with such grace. Every step of the process was handled with the utmost dignity. Highly recommend without hesitation.”

“Recently we had my grandfather’s service here. The grounds are well kept, however we had a strange interaction entering the building. After the usher opened the door for my wife and kids, we entered the building and stopped just a few feet once inside to tie my son’s shoe. The usher then proceeded to begin clipping his fingernails. Meanwhile, as I’m tying shoelaces, nail clippings are flying at us. I looked up at my wife to confirm I wasn’t hallucinating. Her look of disgust confirmed the reality of this older man conducting basic hygiene in the middle of my grandfather’s memorial service. I confronted him and confirmed he was indeed clipping his fingernails and asked him to stop. He was unapologetic and ignored our disgust. Yuck.”

“Our experience with the services of Holloman-Brown could not have been better. I am posting this review two days after the memorial service of my mother and my family have nothing but the best to say about Todd, Theresa and the entire staff of the home. From the onset of the first phone call we found them to be professional and compassionate. In our initial meeting we were walked through each and every step of the process (my mother was to be cremated) in an incredibly professional manner. We were given all options in regards to purchases and was never once pressured in any circumstance to buy something that we didn't need or were "up-sold" on any purchase. We opted for the video slideshow tribute to be played at the service and reception and were extremely pleased with the results. Our guests commented several times on it as well with positive words. I want to also thank Holloman-Brown for their personal recommendation in regards to the officiant of the service. While we are a Christian family, we do not have a regular church here in town so we were provided with the name of a Pastor that they often use in situations such as ours, Pastor Peter Payne of Virginia Beach. We were given the chance to meet with him at the funeral home and we couldn't have been any more pleased with him or the service he performed. While he didn't know my mother in life, he sat with us and asked questions, listened to our stories and was able to personalize her service in a manner that made us feel as if he had been our family pastor. Pastor Payne provided the emotional compassion that was needed in the circumstances. Even at the end of a very long day, Holloman-Brown staff members were there to help us in getting items from the chapel (i.e. flowers, etc.) into our vehicles. They helped with our leaving. Again, could not have been a better situation under the circumstances. While I understand when I read these reviews (and we did prior to choosing this funeral home) that often times it seems to come up that persons have trouble with a funeral home not showing enough emotion or compassion. And while I understand the need for folks to feel that, I believe that we lose sight of the fact that this is a business and that it should be judged on their professional merits. That is why we have chosen to post such a glowing review. We were treated as professionally as one could ask for in the circumstance. In regards to pricing, our family has been involved in other such circumstances and we found the prices to be right in line with what one should be expecting to pay for such services. But I will once again emphasize we were Never at any point, pressured or up-sold. So, once again, my family would like to express their sincerest thanks to the wonderful staff of people at Holloman-Brown for helping us in our time of need. The O'Brien family”
