You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am extremely disappointed with the experience my family had with this funeral home during one of the most painful times in our lives. Instead of providing compassion, professionalism, and guidance, they allowed existing family conflict to influence how they handled our loved one’s arrangements. They failed to properly manage and file necessary paperwork in a timely and responsible manner, which only added unnecessary stress to an already devastating situation. Rather than helping us navigate our options with sensitivity, they attempted to pressure us into paying for services we simply could not afford. When we explained that cremation was the only financially feasible option for our family, their attitude noticeably changed. The compassion we expected was replaced with dismissiveness and hostility. Even more troubling, services were rendered that were not clearly authorized or signed for, leading to additional financial strain and further family conflict. Instead of working to bring clarity and support during a deeply emotional time, their actions created more division within our family. Due to their unwillingness to work with the family and focus on what was financially possible, our loved one’s body was ultimately sent back to the state without a proper burial. This outcome caused even more pain and conflict within our family. We were also informed that inaccurate information was shared with other family members, further deepening the divide during an already heartbreaking time. As a result, our family relationships are fractured, and many of us are no longer speaking. To make matters worse, they are now refusing to return phone calls or respond to emails regarding the completion of necessary paperwork for death certificates and insurance claims, leaving us in continued distress and unable to move forward. This was a time when professionalism, transparency, and empathy mattered most. Unfortunately, we experienced the opposite. I cannot recommend this funeral home to anyone. Families deserve honesty, respect, and support—not pressure, poor communication, and added turmoil during one of the hardest moments of their lives. If no stars was a possibility that’s what I would give. As they still have made no effort and from what I understand don’t intend to rectify their wrongs.”

“I was familiar with DeBaptiste Funeral Home from attending services they had conducted for other extended family members over the years, but I had never worked directly with their team until the recent passing of my beloved mother. From the very beginning, the DeBaptiste team demonstrated an exceptional level of professionalism, compassion, and care. They were knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely accommodating—taking the time to understand and help bring my vision for my mother’s Celebration of Life to fruition in a way that was deeply personal and meaningful. Their guidance and attention to detail gave me confidence and comfort throughout the planning process. On the day of the service, the DeBaptiste team went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect ran smoothly and that my family and I were fully supported. They handled everything with grace and poise, allowing us to focus on honoring my mother without the burden of logistical concerns. I am truly grateful for their partnership during such a difficult time and would highly recommend DeBaptiste to anyone seeking a seamless, respectful, and heartfelt experience during a time of loss. They helped turn a moment of sorrow into a dignified and memorable tribute to a life well lived.”
