You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Fairhaven was incredible from the very first sad day we had to go there. My husband's family is all buried at Fairhaven, but we have had previous mortuary services at another Orange County place (with burial at Fairhaven), and this time we used Fairhaven for everything and it was a much smoother process and beautiful from beginning to end. It is much simpler to have Fairhaven handle everything. Shelley and Ricardo were great at handling the funeral planning and cemetery plot and treated us with kindness and grace. Shelley did not once judge us for not seeking a package and worked with us with what we wanted to bring ourselves, and we are very thankful. There was no unnecessary upselling. They also coordinated for us military honors for the deceased. The day of services, we used the smaller Chapel in the main building and it was beautiful inside. Richard and Yolanda were both excellent day of coordinators, truly professional, kept things moving in a timely manner and kept communicating with us throughout. Fairhaven allowed us to use our own video mp4 for the slideshow and displayed it. Everything was as seamless as you could hope on a sad and stressful day. Thank you Rich and Yolanda. The grounds are beautiful and well kept.”

“My family originally chose Fairhaven for its professionalism, peaceful environment, and location. We bought several plots and felt confident in our decision. When my mom passed in April 2025, the staff helped us immensely and everything went well! I’m forever grateful for their kindness. However, as we’ve been visiting my mom, a lot of issues have arose. My mom chose her location because it was going to be by the water fountain. They assured us that the fountain would be fixed soon, yet it has been broken for quite some time, perhaps over a year now. It has dirty water and mosquitoes. Another issue is the water for our flowers. The outdoor water faucet has been broken for several months. It’s caused us to get water from another nearby faucet. However, I come today and that faucet is now locked. I’m not quite sure what’s going on with this cemetery’s operations, but it needs to be reviewed. It’s quite frustrating to try to peacefully spend time with your loved ones and you consistently encounter issues.”

“I want to express my deep dissatisfaction with the services I have received from Fairhaven Cemetery on two separate and very painful occasions. When my son passed away, I met with Maria to discuss the services I wanted for him. We had a clear conversation about my wishes. However, when the day of the service arrived, it was nothing like what I had requested. I was then told that I would need to pay additional money for the services we had already discussed. I was extremely upset. During one of the most difficult moments of my life, I felt the service provided was cold-hearted and lacking compassion, as though my grief did not matter. Two years later, after the passing of my other son, I am once again experiencing distress due to poor communication and inconsistent information regarding my son’s headstone. I have been told one thing, only to be told something different later. I am still struggling to have my son’s headstone completed, and this ongoing delay has caused me significant stress, anxiety, and emotional pain. No parent should have to fight this hard for dignity and respect for their child’s resting place. These experiences have left me feeling that Fairhaven Cemetery is more concerned with money than with compassion or honoring families during their time of loss. Based on my experiences, I would not recommend Fairhaven Cemetery to others. I respectfully request that my headstone matter be addressed and processed as soon as possible, out of basic respect for my son.”
