You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“During one of the most difficult and heartbreaking times of our lives, Hillcrest Funeral Home showed us a level of compassion, care, and professionalism that we will never forget. From the very first phone call when we were simply inquiring about services, all the way through every step of the process, they treated our family with kindness, patience, and genuine understanding. Losing our loved one was deeply painful, and yet the team made us feel supported, guided, and held during moments when we felt overwhelmed. They anticipated needs we didn’t even realize we had and handled every detail with such grace and respect. There was never a moment where we felt rushed or like just another family, they truly cared. What stands out the most is how they comforted us in ways they may not even realize. Their presence brought peace during chaos, and their compassion helped us focus on honoring our loved one rather than worrying about logistics. Everything was handled beautifully and flawlessly, we genuinely have not one complaint. We are forever grateful for the dignity, empathy, and professionalism they showed our family. If you are looking for a place that will treat your loved one and your family with heartfelt care and respect, I highly recommend Hillcrest Funeral Home. They are truly exceptional.”

“Hillcrest Funeral Home offers everything we needed when our Mother passed away. The staff was helpful, and explained everything to us step by step. No questions were left unanswered, and they were so patient while we went through the process of deciding what was best for our Mother. Each time I called what I was impressed with most is that while we had a Funeral Director assigned, anyone who answered our the phone could answer my questions concerning the services. They always kept notes so anyone could discuss what was happening, but they also relayed my call to our Director, and he would get back to me same day even if I was provided with the information I required. Not only is the staff very professional, they are also very kind. I happened to walk in after they were closed, but one of the owners was there, and I was impressed again how he took the time to help me, as I was returning home before the services, and had to confirm a few things before I left town. They are a small funeral home, but offer something I haven’t seen in larger funeral homes, and that is your family comes first, and they listened to our needs on how we wanted to honor our Mother. There was never any pressure to do more like I’ve experienced with other funeral homes. They asked us what we wanted and showed us the services they provided, but it was left to us to make the choices for the services. You get a sense that they want to help you celebrate your loved one’s life to the best of their ability. The chapel they offered for the rosary is beautiful, and feels very much like a church, which I found very comforting. They also offered a family room off from the chapel where we could bring food, as it would be a long day for immediate family. Again, something that was very much appreciated, and it’s things like this where I felt they are looking out for the family through a very hard time. The funeral services from the Rosary to the Church were all handled by the staff with so much care, and this took a great pressure off the family. If you are looking for a place where your loved one will be handled with care, I don’t see how you can do better than Hillcrest.”
