You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“11/28/25, I am adding to this glowing review. Blaire, a new hire, is as brilliant and compassionate as Kaleigh and Peyton is wonderful as well. One new discovery for our family are the options for celebrating and honoring loved ones, now offered. From bringing ashes, if cremation is something one chooses, to the moon or below the ocean and everywhere in between all planned by Dignity via MD. The urns vary from dissolvable beautiful salt urns to bracelets or other accessories which hold the loved ones' ashes. And to my Jewish community and traditional burials: In 100 years, (as we say addressing something sad), when in need of a funeral home, Marshall-Donnelly, is still as wonderful as they were over 100 years ago. Observing members of our Jewish Community choosing to go elsewhere was confusing, unsettling, and upon researching as to why, discovered there is no issue other than disinformation. Marshall-Donnelly is still our Jim Brewer’s Marshall-Donnelly and though bought by Dignity, Jim is still there and his legacy of providing our Jewish Community with excellent funeral services and more importantly, Familial Compassion will always be Marshall-Donnelly’s purpose. Fellow landsmen and landswomen, Come home. Before Marshall-Donnelly was bought by bigger company, (still is Marshall Donnelly and in same place), sadly, it was like home for my whole family and most if not all of my Jewish Community here in Nashville. Jim Brewer was/ is like the head of the home and was/is that family member who when you saw/see him walk in, you immediately are comforted, like big strong arms carrying you through to the other side of the hardest days of your life. Well, though staff has changed, thanks to Kayleigh Barker, I am confident that the place I have prepaid to be laid to rest still feels like home. We recently lost a loved one and our first time dealing with MD since Jim Brewer is not the main guy, the guy who you call, you work with whole time, who assists with taking the person into Synagogue and/or cemetery, the one who never imposes, just hugs with a sad face too because he knew/knows every single one of us! I had only talked on phone or by email with Kayleigh and seeing her for the first time at the cemetery, with that gorgeous bright warm smile and interacting with everyone, standing right amidst us, making sure all went as planned, was incredible! She wrote the Obituary, taking our input and constructing a beautifully written tribute. So now, I am relieved and today she helped me with some things I wanted to update for my files, and it turned out to be hilarious, rather than maudlin. I caution all who are needing these services or will in future, for yourself or other family. Make sure that when you are planning ahead, or if for someone else, check that the finances are available and set up for payment by the loved one's left behind. Otherwise, there could be glitches which could cause delays and that's one time stress should not be added to all else. When scheduling with your Church, Mosque, or Synagogue, that all is cleared at the funeral home of your choice.”

“Some years ago, I had a niece that had a little boy that passed away a few weeks after he was born I had a friend that knew Marshall Donnelly and Combs She explained the situation to them that the young lady was a single parent and didn’t have any insurance this funeral home Buried the baby free of any charge, took this child all the way to Lewisburg Tennessee and performed a graveside service absolutely free of charge. I will never forget his generosity in doing this for our niece. He was so kind and patient and compassionate in this situation. I just wanted to share what this business did for our family.”

“Every minute with Thomas and the staff was full of love, care, attention to detail, and gentleness. I adored everyone I met and their demeanor was always soothing and calming. I ended up smiling in spite of my grief over and over because of the care they gave me and my family. I also never felt like I had to expend any emotional energy or precious time, as they thought of everything before I did. The experience was never rushed, and there was always time to tell a story or two about my spouse.”
