You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I’m so thankful to have found Hull’s Walnut Creek Chapel when my dad passed away. They treated me with so much kindness and respect at every interaction. The process to cremate my dad was simple; they explained pricing for exactly what I wanted and didn’t upsell me at any point. Another funeral home was quoting me almost 2x the price at Hull’s and listing a lot of other additional fees. We had a simple family-only viewing at the chapel, and I’m very thankful for how they presented my dad. He looked very peaceful, and it brought me a lot of comfort. I also appreciate the memorial website Hull’s provides, because it’s more elegant and easier to use than the commercial alternatives. They were able to make a couple of corrections to the initial obituary I provided. Patrick, in particular, also went above and beyond by working with a mobile notary to provide a notarized cremation certificate which I need for bringing my dad to his final resting place. Choosing Hull’s was the best decision I could have made after my dad passed away. I’m so very grateful to them for making this part of the grieving process a lot easier.”

“I don't often write reviews, but when you are in mourning it's so helpful to find a place where you feel comfortable. When my father passed the hospital handed me a list of thirty places to call, and I had no idea where to begin or what to look for. I called and researched every listing, and Hulls stood out. The staff at Hulls were kind, sympathetic, and answered all of my questions in a supportive manner. When we came in, they continued to have the same level of kindness and respect, and I felt like my dad was in safe hands and would be well cared for. Hulls is also quite unusual in that they offer on-site cremation, which I found most places do not (there can be a delay of days to weeks after the service, which is an unpleasant thought). It provided my family with great comfort to know that my dad would be immediately cremated after we had a chance to say our final goodbyes. They also did such a nice job dressing my father, and he looked very peaceful. Right before they cremated him, Mr. Hull came in personally to introduce himself to my mom and family, and let us know that he would take good care of my dad. It was really nice to know that he was in the care of someone who displayed such respect. I also want to add that our family is not Christian, and Hulls was able and willing to accommodate my mom's Japanese requests as needed. Walking my dad to the crematory was important to her, and the on-site crematory made this possible. Hulls made a really horrible time in our lives stress-free and as pleasant as one could hope for. Although I hope I do not need their services again soon, I would hands down recommend them to anyone in need.”

“They are so respectful and sympathetic. Both my parents were prepared for burial at Hulls. When we met with Mr. Hull he made sure that everything was taken care of and help us through the process of the death of both our parents. Everything was on time and beautiful for both funerals. An amazing group of people. Thank you so much for making this devastating time in my life so much easier. Patti Rettig.”
