You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“⭐☆☆☆☆ If it could be zero stars ! Our family had a very upsetting and unacceptable experience with Michel Funeral Home during the loss of our loved one. Services were planned and paid for in advance, including the publication of an obituary. Despite clear instructions, the obituary was not posted until days later and only after we called to the funeral home to remind them. When it was finally posted, it contained incorrect information that we had specifically instructed not to be used. Multiple calls and messages were made to correct the error, but they went unanswered. When we finally got a response requesting the correction, the response was dismissive, condescending, and lacked compassion. Rather than resolving the issue, we were blamed for reaching out and informed in writing that they would no longer help us, despite having active, paid arrangements. As a result of this breakdown in communication, our family was informed that services were canceled just three days before the scheduled service. This added significant stress during an already painful time. Accuracy, communication, and empathy are essential in funeral services. Unfortunately, our family experienced none of these. I would strongly caution others before choosing this funeral home.”

“Our family trusted this funeral home during one of the most painful times of our lives, and that trust was completely broken. The obituary they published for my uncle was incorrect. When a family member called to politely request a correction, the owner became hostile and argumentative instead of professional. The situation escalated to the point where he told our family we could not have my uncle’s remains and is currently withholding them, preventing us from holding his funeral. This behavior has caused extreme emotional distress to a grieving family. Funeral services should be built on compassion, respect, and professionalism. Sadly, that was not our experience. I strongly urge others to carefully consider where they place their trust during such a vulnerable time”
