You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Altmeyer Funeral Home, from Kathryn Altmeyer, to everyone employed there are truly great, respectful, people working with the families that need their services. My husband's body was personally picked up by, Kathryn Altmeyer and their staff at the Hospice House in Virginia Beach where he passed away. I have never known owners of another Funeral Home in this area to do this. We were treated with the utmost respect and she offered her sincerest condolences while there. At the funeral home we were met with funeral director, Alexis White and from beginning to end, she was polite, soft spoken, and professional. The arrangements were handled to our liking, and the funeral service was conducted beautifully with dignity and respect. I cannot say enough good things about Alexis White. She answered and returned phone calls promptly, and went above and beyond the scope of her duties to keep us informed about events with the funeral that were happening beyond her control. Specifically, with my husband's funeral and burial, it was the weather... predictions for snow and ice for several weekends in a row. His funeral kept getting pushed ahead because of it. The funeral did not take place for 2 weeks after his passing, and he was not buried at the cemetery until 3 days after the funeral. This was not due to the fault of the funeral home. It was the cemetery. It was frustrating, however trying to explain to the family as to why the funeral or the burial could not take place, each time we got a new date because of the weather. Also, I would like others to know that the Altmeyer's, do not turn families away for a lack of funds. This Funeral Home will work with you to see that your loved one is taken care of. And if you overpaid, for services that did not occur, that they will see to it that your money is refunded. The Altmeyer's and all of those whom work for them are just good, honest, people. The services that were obtained for the price that l paid was an excellent value, in comparison to most funeral homes. I encourage you to call or stop by, for a tour of this beautiful facility, and meet some of the staff. They treat you like you should be treated. I would recommend this funeral home to anyone.”

“Angie Todd was a God send for me during a very difficult time after I lost my mom. She sat with me and just listened. Altmeyers funeral home handled everything for me when my Dad passed in 2016 so they were the obvious choice when mom passed this year. They show so much compassion and care. They are very knowledgeable in all aspects military. They help you understand everything you need to do. I will always recommend them. There is no place better.”

“Angie Todd was absolutely the best and took the best care of my mom. She cared for us like we were Family. She did not treat us like we were a Paycheck she treated us like family. Angie was amazing! She cared for my mom so sweetly. The way she dressed her, put her make up and jewelry and everything on. She wrote the most beautiful obituary The video with pictures and music The picture board The cards with my moms pic and scripture It was all the beautiful small touches! Angie is such an angel!”
