You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Death is already difficult, but this establishment lied to my family about calling the county morgue so they could handle it and make more money off of my family. The morgue set the record straight… So glad the work worked with my family Then, on top of that, this place supplied ashes that were scooped from the bottom of the barrel after cremating several people in a day. Before taking the ashes to the final resting place, we divvy some up into little necklaces. While going through the ashes, there were blue, jean rivets, and metal buttons for probably 12 pairs of pants my brother was in his pajamas when he passed away and nobody put blue jeans on his body because it was decomposing. The people at Chapel mortuary were nasty and spiteful toward me when I went in in person to deal with the retrieval of the ashes. They were pissed off. It seemed because I did not schedule and pay them for a big to do gathering at their chapel. There should be an easier way for someone to take care of their loved one in the end The way this establishment handled their business was greedy, manipulative, cold, just downright nasty and unnecessary.”

“We met and reviewed our options. We signed for everything required for cremation. They picked up my son and handled everything. I am grateful for this service. They have been very kind and helpful in this very difficult situation. I had no problem picking up my son’s ashes. Thank you for your services.”

“I found this service to be trustworthy, professional and compassionate. I do not usually post reviews, but I was calling in and noticed the one low review. I want to share that my experience was really wonderful. Even though this is a low cost direct cremation, I found the customer service to be amazingly prompt and helpful at every stage.”
