You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I know it’s an awkward thing to review a funeral home but you’re in such a vulnerable state when someone dies, hopefully this helps and I’m sorry for your loss. Byron West, helped our family, I totally recommend him. At a terrible and emotional time he was so pleasant and empathetic, he helped us tremendously. My brother passed away Thanksgiving weekend. There was zero preparation for his passing. When you have to pool resources together to cover expenses, cost and care become key topics. Our family did go to three funeral homes to get pricing for burial and funeral services. Larkin in Sandy: $18,000-$20,000 Jenkins-Soffe in South Jordan: $10,000-$13,000. Serenity in Bluffdale was $8,000- $10,000. There’s seriously tons of costs for a funeral. Transfer of the deceased to the mortuary, services, burial, programs, obituary……. Jenkins-Soffe is a beautiful and peaceful funeral home. Light atmosphere, clean, smells pleasant. They don’t nickel and dime you for every little thing. Because it was Thanksgiving weekend when my brother passed away multiple family members were out of town. Byron let our family set up sessions as people came back to town to see my brother’s body and have time to say goodbye. They live stream the funeral which is so helpful for out of town friends and family and people who just want the closure of a service but don’t want to be around all the people. If you’re in the unfortunate place to have to plan a funeral, Jenkins-Soffe is highly recommended.”

“We’ve worked with Jenkins-Soffe for several family funerals and I could not recommend them more. They offer so many resources to make losing a loved one less painful when it comes to logistics. We are so grateful for Blake and Grant for making the process as easy as possible.”

“My cousin ajay had lots of people attend his funeral, which is not surprising because he was loved!! he was warm and laughed when he spoke :( there was a ton of people crammed into the small foyer even before the funeral started, they were not on the ball and did not want to get chairs set up when we asked, he told us “its almost over” and it had just barely started. When the service was over the family was taking time to say their goodbyes before the casket was closed and it was only 10-15 minutes before someone on the intercom told everyone to hurry and get out to their cars. I would never recommend this mortuary to anyone!! they are unaccommodating and unprofessional!”
