You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My cousin passed away unexpectedly last month. Being from out of town I was given a list of 4 mortuaries to call to make arrangements. After speaking with 3 other companies, Mesa was the last one on my list. After speaking with Michael, I knew he was going to take care of my cousin and handle everything that I needed to get done. He was attentive and respectful. I explained my situation and he assured me he was going to handle it all. I was so fearful of leaving CO but he made me feel safe, explained the process and kept me informed step by step. During an incredibly difficult time, Michael treated our family with genuine compassion, dignity, and care. Every detail was handled thoughtfully, and we felt supported throughout the entire process. I am deeply grateful for his professionalism and kindness.”

“My mom passed away and being from out of state choosing someone to take care of our needs we found Mesa Mortuary and Michael. He made everything move seamlessly and kept in constant contact with me. Losing a loved one is hard and not something someone wants to handle. If I had to do this over again I would choose Mesa Mortuary instantly.”

“My mother-in-law passed away on May 16, 2025. Because we live in another state, I had to handle everything over the phone, including arrangements to have her ashes shipped. We were given many promises and told this was a family business and that he was “the best of the best.” Unfortunately, our experience did not reflect that at all. My card was charged immediately, yet it took over a month for us to receive my mother-in-law’s ashes. Her death certificate was incorrect in multiple areas, and we were told the corrections would be handled. It is now December, and I still do not have a corrected death certificate. During one of the most painful times for our family, we were met with delays, false promises, and a lack of follow-through. This added unnecessary stress and heartache to an already devastating situation. I would not recommend this business. Please consider going elsewhere.”
