You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We recently had a funeral at Green Hills. It was a huge help to have it pre planned. A year earlier we visited to choose a site. Even though it was in the midst of terminal cancer, it was a good day in a beautiful, peaceful place, much better than a day at the doctor’s. The historic church fit our small gathering. I had a slideshow made of photos with music. The only criticism is they would not let me upload photos until 4 days before the funeral. It did not give me time to preview and rearrange, and it was a hardship to be doing it so close to the funeral. Those are the days I was making arrangements for out of town guests and reception etc. I should have been able to do it at any time, even before death. The funeral itself was really worthwhile for everyone who came, it was healing, uplifting, and therapeutic. The staff were perfect and empathetic in guiding us. Thank you.”

“Dear Green Hills: A Heartfelt Thank You I cannot express enough gratitude to Green Hills for receiving my husband's remains from College Station, Texas and handling everything so beautifully there in Palos Verdes, California. They were absolutely brilliant throughout this terribly difficult time. Ms. Hecht and Ms. Palacio were simply wonderful—keeping in touch whilst I was still in Texas and sorting everything remotely not limited to flowers, appointment of the clergyman. They even sent video tours of burial spots, which helped me choose a lovely peaceful site that feels like a proper English garden nestled in the Palos Verdes hills. Quite remarkable, really. I was particularly touched by how they helped with the financial bits—dealing directly with the insurance people to cover costs. Saved me a tremendous amount of worry when I couldn't face those practical matters. When I finally made it over a few days before the service, they'd arranged everything splendidly. The ceremony at the historical church was just as we'd hoped. They even organised a little drive past his parents' graves before we laid him to rest nearby—a thoughtful touch that meant the world. What made it even more special was clergyman who presided over both the historical church and graveside services was coincidentally from Texas himself! Such a lovely connection to where we'd been. (Green Hills I cannot recall his name. Please extend gratitude to him and perhaps provide a name reminder). The burial ground was a bit tricky on the day, so they had to place the casket in a temporary above-ground vault, which turned out rather more moving than I'd expected. It was beautiful. Ms. Hecht is still sorting the headstone arrangements (there's a temporary marker for now), with the same care she's shown throughout. I've been ever so impressed with how Green Hills accommodated every wish with such warmth and professionalism from afar. A proper godsend during such a difficult chapter.”

“The staff at Green Hills was outstanding in helping with the arrangements. They were all easy to work with from the initial planning to the dedicated support the evening before and day of the services. They were very accommodating and helpful in suggesting things to consider or remember, all the while leaving the final decision to me, but providing gentle guidance. I very much appreciated all their support at a very difficult time with so many decisions to consider. I never felt pressured and ended up with the service exactly as I wanted it. I highly recommend the staff at Green Hills. The arrangement director was Joel Ramirez, Jose Carrillo was dedicated to us for the actual services, and David was so helpful with the music/video coordination. These gentlemen were so very helpful and considerate to our family. Thank you so much.”
