You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Would NOT recommend AT ALL.. they pierced my grandmothers ears post mortem..We are from an Adventist family , my grandmother’s ears was Never pierced..I would always ask her about that as a child if I could get mines pierced and she was always adamant about it. She never even wore clip on earrings and the day she passed it was also not pierced. so idk who’s pearl earrings my granny ended up with but they defiled her body. At first we irritated ,thought they had pasted/ glued it but it was not glued, there were blunt holes in her ears, when they removed them. The makeup was really heavy and childlike. Also when initially we went to confirm the body there was no ear piercing so this happened as they were dressing her…again there are plenty other funeral homes to use.. Gaffney is not what it used to be, bury your love ones with honest people.”

“My family and I have been using this funeral home for YEARS. Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with Gaffney's when my mother passed. I was unable to get the ashes until the morning of the services. They made multiple mistakes on my mother's death certificate (which I had to pay for).. They are extremely careless and treated my family and myself as if we were a burden, which I find disrespectful seeing as we are entrusting them with the body of our loved ones. Their carelessness made my mother's funeral process more difficult than it needed to be. I would not recommend this funeral home to anyone! Please bring your loved ones elsewhere.”

“My family used Gaffney's for my Grandfather's funeral services.. so when my Grandmother passed I figured we would use Gaffney's since we were familiar with them. Honestly, I wish I would have used another funeral home because I do not feel they were empathic or professional. They held my grandmother's body in the morgue for more days than we were told - delaying her cremation - so we had to pick up her urn the morning of her services, making us late to the church. They made several mistakes on her death certificate.. Then they were rude when I asked them to correct their mistakes. Very disheartening, that they would treat people who are in mourning in such a manner. I would give them 0/0 Starts if I could.”
