You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Avoid Plattsburgh Memorials at All Costs. Dealing with Plattsburgh Memorials was one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had—especially during a time of grief when compassion and professionalism should be a given. While they did eventually complete the prepaid engraving service in time for the memorial, the process leading up to it was nothing short of horrific. The receptionist was shockingly rude and dismissive, showing a complete lack of empathy and tact—qualities one would think are essential in the bereavement industry. Communication was inconsistent, inaccurate, and at times downright disrespectful and hostile. Promised phone calls were never returned with the excuse that they were too busy. For a business that deals with grieving families, their customer service is appallingly poor. There was no follow-through, no accountability, and certainly no courtesy. It’s unacceptable to treat clients this way, especially when they are navigating such a sensitive time. I strongly urge others to avoid doing business with Plattsburgh Memorials. There are plenty of other providers in the area who understand the importance of compassion, reliability, and respectful communication. Don’t put yourself through the stress and disappointment I endured.”

“I was referred to Plattsburgh Memorials to arrange for a memorial stone; I was sent a contract by the Cemetery, I mailed a check early in August with the signed contract, but never heard from the company that they received the check or to communicate in any way. My check was cashed the end of Sept 2025, still no communication. I have left no less than 6 messages to find out when the stone would be placed, the last one this past Friday 11/7. My only method of communication was through the representative from the Cemetery I originally contacted who referred me to Plattsburgh Memorials that to make the stone and place it would be 6-8 weeks. I was told there had been illness in the family...but we are now approaching 2-1/2 months with no direct contact with this company. I would NOT refer this company.”

“Terrible experience. We spent an afternoon there and made a choice of stone style and color of stone with my widowed mother. We asked how and if we could customize it and they claimed they could. We sent artwork 2-3 times because the person receiving the emails did not make efforts to understand what we wanted. Designs were coming back to us incorrect and follow-up was very difficult. With a month and a half of back and forth (they would never call us back) we still didn't receive the stone for the grave service. To top it off, there was no communication on stone delivery and when the stone finally delivered (the cemetery employee had to call us) the stone was the wrong color. Multiple calls were made to try to understand the error. No acknowledgement or explanation. We were not charged. But no phone call or letter with any explanation or apology. A horrible experience at a very vulnerable time for my mother.”
