You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the funeral home that provided exceptional service for my brother, who sadly passed away on Saturday, August 31, at the age of 40. The professionalism and compassion exhibited by the entire staff, from the receptionist to the funeral director, were truly commendable. Having experienced a similar loss four years ago with my sister at a different establishment, the contrast in service quality is remarkable. This funeral home stands out for its cleanliness, inviting atmosphere, and comfort. I wholeheartedly recommend their services to others in need.”

“The service provided at Maspons Funeral Home was one disguised in compassion and empathy but in the end that is a lie and a means to take your money, which is the only thing they truly care about. I dealt with 2 funeral director during the entire process, none of which were stellar, particularly well versed, patient or kind, however the day of my mother's funeral they did not provide an escort after payment and supposed confirmation had been made. When. I called to speak to the funeral director about losing the funeral procession (which the driver kindly attempted to do, even without the escort) the funeral directors response was rude, disrespectful, lacking compassion and empathy, not to mention useless because she didn't do anything. Funeral Homes are never a place one wants to be at but rather must be at. We entrust strangers to guide us and help us during one of the most difficult times of our lives and I expect that the people tasked with this job would be kind and hel provide the service, while facilitating a difficult time. I'd expect them to be people who have some sort of calling to help those in needed, a deep sense of empathy to guide people during a most difficult time and yet at Maspons, I encountered people who's only "calling" was to make money, who are only "compassionate or empathetic" when they are charging your credit card. Go anywhere else but here, trust me this is not a good place/nor are their good people there to facilitate this difficult moment.”

“My family had already made pre-arrangements for my grandmother's passing. With regards to the transport & handling her body, all was good (which is why I rated 2 stars). When it came to customer service, timely communication & support, it was non-existent. My grandmother passed on Friday, 2/16. The next day, we had written her obituary to be posted on the web page they created at the Maspons website. It has yet to be uploaded. Multiple emails were sent by me & multiple calls and in person visits from my mom. My grandmother has tons of family out of the country that were unable to attend any services & it was important to us to have the obituary posted so we could share the link with them. My uncle also had to send multiple emails just to get the family login info to upload pictures of her. My mom was told to go pick up some personal belongings that were ready, and when she arrived, no one knew what she was talking about. More wasted time. The amount of time & level of frustration I witnessed my mom, aunt & uncle deal with, in just trying to communicate is unacceptable.”
