You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“The way I was treated here was unacceptable, and down right unprofessional. Ms. Betty was absolutely pleasant and delightful! But Todd is another story. I encountered him before back in 2007. We did not go with them for other reasons back then. But, I do not forget a name or face. What I do remember back then is that I did not like the exchange between us. However, I was a bit younger, so I decided to give him another try. One because I knew he would fit my budget. And two, because I always try to support black owned businesses whenever possible. This man treated me politely whenever my husband and I went in on Monday, August 19, 2024. We made the arrangements as a pre-need as my loved one had not passed yet. I left and forgot to pay him in full...But God! The next morning my loved one passed away, I immediatlely called him to let him know. I accidentally called him by the wrong name. He snapped at me! I was bit confused and taken aback, as he questioned me about calling him the wrong name. I apologized. I proceeded to tell him my loved one passed away. After that rude but quick encounter, I headed to White Chapel Memorial Gardens, where I own several plots, which I had explained to both him and Ms. Betty the day before. Todd got mad when I called him from White Chapel inquiring about having services on labor day. He said, "So, I have to come in on my day off?" I politely told him no. You don't have to do anything. I am just asking. He kept asking what was White Chapel going to charge me. I said nothing. Ms. Betty gets on the phone. I told her the same thing. He called me back as I left the offices of White Chapel and wanted to charge me an additional $750. I was livid at the treatment he gave me. Because I am black, he treated me like I had no other choice but to deal with him. He was rude, inconsiderate, unprofessional, and lacked decorum. I chose to use Baker Funeral Services. The customer service there was impeccable and superb! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. You will not get a third time with me. How dare you treat me like I had to deal with you. 17 years later and Todd has not changed. Actually, he has gotten worse. I know everyone has a different experience. Had he simply told me the cost would be an additional $750, I would have paid it, and left it at that. But, he had not an ounce of compassion nor professionalism, and customer service was the absolute worst. When I asked my husband what he thought, he stated that when we walked in on Monday evening (I called before I came), Todd acted as if he didn't want to do business. He should have just stated that, I would have saved us both some time, trouble, anger and frustration and gone elsewhere. I will never go back there! Beware! While I was at white Chapel, I was going to have my husband go pay Todd at Central (in full). I'm glad that I forgot to pay him. I would have been stuck dealing with him. I was so angry, I could not do anything else that day. All the while, the lady at White Chapel could hear his shenanigans. She apologized, and presented me with an alternative. I did not go with their company either. However, the compassion and understanding she had for me in my time of grief was much appreciated. Todd treated me like crap. If you choose to deal with him, please Be aware! Ms. Betty is an absolute delight as I stated before! Please, do better Todd! I decided after a bit of consideration to go with Baker Funeral Services. I paid them in full. It was slightly cheaper for the same services at Baker than at Central. What I like about Baker, there are no secrets. Everything is listed on their website. The prices were right there on the site. So when one goes in to speak with them, you already know what it will cost you. Do better Todd! Just do better!”

“Three unexpected, unplanned deaths in my family. No insurance, and no money. Todd and Ms Betty were warm, welcoming, loving, compassionate, and very empathetic to what we were dealing with. They were very professional, and thoughtful, even took the time out to really speak with us abut our loved ones, and the situations that lead to their passing. They showed a great deal of genuine concern for those of us who were left grieving. They were clearly not out to rake in the money like other mortuaries here, they just wanted to provide a professional, quality going home service that honored our loved ones, and gave them dignity; and they went above & beyond to do so. I cannot say enough good things about Todd and Ms Betty. Their compassion during this time meant the world to me. The world truly needs more people like them in it. I thank God they were there with us every step of the way. It made things much easier, even when what was left of the family unraveled. God bless you both, Todd, and Ms Betty! 💜”
