You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I sent all the requested documentation (evidence) to Laura Sherman the following day after receiving her email. No response, so I sent the same email again 2 months later, again no reponse. I received a mailed letter 1 year later stating they closed the investigation due to insufficient evidence to support my claim. I made a complaint against Accu-Care Cremation & Funerals, Fullerton. My father's death ceritificate and permit contained inconsistencies, which suggested that the ashes received were not my father's!”

“California State Cemetery’s and Bureaus We’re supposed to go out and investigate Baker/ Continental funeral home in Oakland. James Representative of California state cemeteries and bureaus spoke with the funeral home. The funeral home told them many lies. Like one lie, That was told was that I did not have possession of my father within the 7 days. (Untrue.) (I’m a make this statement. The funeral home never stated it at any time there was a time framed. To discuss arrangements between family and siblings). Then I spoke to another representative Andrea. She stated, that I did have contact with the funeral home in 7 days but the other funeral home (Robinson) that was supposed to pick my father up was after the 7 days so state California of Cemeteries And bureaus denied my claim. Now James stated that I didn’t have Possession of my father within 7 days. Which One is it? James closed the case. Stating that it fell underneath their rules and regulation 7100. Neither Representative did any investigations. Now because there was no investigation done.As of August 31,2022. The funeral home is now stating that my father was abandoned for 10 days. So without any consent from the family because the family was not notified by this funeral home. They plan on burying my father on September 8, 2022.My father passed away in May 2022. It is now September. We Didn’t even get a chance to have a funeral. Because of this funeral home. This funeral home is Negligence, Unlawful and Wrongdoings. Do you know this funeral home held my father Hostage for over 100+ days. And the state of California of cemeteries in bureaus is still stating there was no violations done. Now if anybody knows anything. That makes no common sense. The state of California cemeteries and bureaus. This organization will not help you. Pretty much they are just collecting a check. They do not intend to do the right thing. In this type of Situation feels like the funeral homes are paying the state of California off to not fine them. Then try to make you believe that you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s sad that we have people in positions that do not help you. I am praying on each and every one of them that was involved that God will get each and everyone of them one by one. So I believe the best thing to do if you’re in a situation like this. Is see if you can get in contact with the governor of California. Because these people are a waste of time and energy.”
