You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This is by far, the worst hospital I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of them. I'm just gonna keep it simple about my experience because I could write a book about how terrible this place is. From my past couple visits. I have been misdiagnosed TWICE by two different doctors. I dodged a bullet with the first doctor, who wanted me to get surgery because I had "carpal tunnel" Thanks to my insurance for requiring a nerve test, ended up not actually having carpal tunnel, I just needed physical therapy and it solved it. This doctor, Dr. Tristian Hartzell is supposed to be the best hand doctor in Nebraska but god....he isn't lol My second visit was at the ER, I had a fractured finger but Dr. Andrew Linnaus barely talked with me about my finger, didn't go over the xrays with me, and told me it was just a contusion. But on my OneChart, it said it was a fractured and I saw the xray when i was in the room. He didn't take care of me and sent me home... This is just pathetic... Lastly, the communication at this hospital is awful. No doctors/nurses communicate with each other, Risk is also not helpful at all. They don't care about your experience.”

“I went to the urgent care right next to the hospital and was sent over to the hospital to have a lab done. The hospital is now charging $1,036.82 for a simple lab test. The same lab test in Omaha is $89.96?! I know that Omaha is going to be cheaper, but that is extortionate. Heck, even Columbus hospitals are offering the same service for hundreds of dollars less. I call the billing department and get virtually no help at all. No offer for a lump sum payment discount. Just confusion and lies to try and get me off the phone. For anyone going through something similar, I was told by the last guy that they don't send to collections for three months. I don't dispute that I owe something, but what they are charging is outrageous and I don't understand why they would rather pay to send me to collections when I am willing to work with them to come to a REASONABLE figure for a very very basic service.”

“Pulmonologist department, Dr. Kamille is nice and understands you, how ever her nurse is not nice, she asks multiple questions and ask multiple times well if you took back that will you wear the other equipment, push push push, so I told the nurse to forget the whole entire stuff that I was supposed to complete, I cancelled everything! I will not be returning back to that office because of the nurse that treated me like that, that's to bad for the doctor.”
