You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am writing to express my deep disappointment and anger regarding an incident at Oakwood Cemetery today. Despite the City of Concord website stating the cemetery is open until 7:00 PM, my wife and I arrived between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to find every gate chained and locked. Today is my father’s birthday, and we simply wanted to place balloons on his grave. While we were there, we saw staff opening a gate to leave the premises. My father’s grave is less than 10 feet inside that gate. I asked the employee if I could have 30 seconds to place the balloons, explaining it was his birthday. The employee showed zero compassion, refused to let us in, and told us to "come back tomorrow." It is unacceptable for a city-run cemetery to lock its gates during posted business hours, and it is even more disgraceful for city employees to treat grieving residents with such a total lack of empathy. I expect the Buildings and Grounds Department to address why the facility was closed early and why their staff is being allowed to turn away families in such a heartless manner”

“Love going on walks here and just looking around! The people that work there are exceptionally nice, and the place is well maintained! Beautiful place!”

“Why does this place never follow it's hours? It takes me two hours to get here and they are supposed to close at 8 in October. Thanks. And also dusk in November, which dusk by definition is the time after sunset and before it's totally dark outside. I've come at 430 and the gates were locked. Why can't they follow theirs own hours? It's not fair to people who drive there just for the gates to be closed”
