You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Warning! Choose a different funeral home! I’m sad to have had the experience our family did with this funeral home. My beloved grandma is laid to rest now and what happened can’t be undone or redone. Having a peaceful experience laying a loved one to rest is what you’re looking for when seeking out a mortuary. Unfortunately we did not get that from Home for Funerals, and the owner does not have integrity to honor their mistake. It’s all about making the largest profit. Where to start….things were fine until we got into the vehicles to go to the burial. Upon getting in the vehicles we were told my grandmas gravesite wasn’t ready. They pointed fingers at the vault company and cemetery for not set up correctly. However, Home for funerals should have had oversight over both of these people since we paid home for funerals to pay the valet company and cemetery for their duties. We were told we would use the gravesite that was set up instead and be rest assured my grandmas gravesite wasn’t would be moved to her plot. That didn’t happen. Instead we were escorted to my grandmas plot where we stared at a board covering the hole where she would be laid to rest. No last opportunity to touch her casket and say goodbye. No laying flower on her casket. I didn’t know the last time I’d “see her” in the casket was at the church. It was not a peaceful send off. We get back to the chapel for lunch where the family paid $17/person. We were served a glorified lunch able that probably was only $3/person. We could have gotten chipotle catering for $17/person. When my mother and her siblings spoke with home for funerals, they only wanted to remove the tent off the final bill. Really??? After a failed oversight and disgraceful burial, they “still provided a service and would charge full price”. So disgusted. After they raised the final bill by $400 in other areas because the initial quote was “an estimate”, they decided they could reduce it by about $1000 for their mistake. This was only after standing up for ourselves and what a disgrace their “service” was. I also learned from my wife that the ushers who work for home for funerals were in the side room laughing it up during the service. Laughing it up in the next room?!? Wow!! My hope is you go somewhere else and get a peaceful experience with your heart and your emotions in mind. Not with this funeral home that’s looking at making sure their bottom line is protected in all areas.”

“Everyone was so professional and friendly, guiding us through the process of memorializing our mother and her life. They were available day and night and treated us as family, sometimes having to deal multiple opinions and emotions. We used Home for Funerals twenty years ago when our father passed and again five years ago when my husband passed away suddenly. Their guidance helped us get through some really tough times , but I felt so comfortable with their services that I have pre planned my own funeral,, knowing that they will respect my wishes and ease the responsibilities of my family.”

“Home For Funerals was amazing to our family when my father passed away. They handled all of the details which was a great comfort and were so caring and kind throughout the entire process. Erik and Elizabeth are wonderful and even continued to reach out to check on us weeks later. I highly recommend Home For Funerals - they are the best at what they do!”
