Second Chance Church

“I attended this church during one of the most painful seasons of my life. I had just been fired from a worship ministry role and was deeply wounded by the church system. Second Chance was the only place I felt safe enough to walk into again. For that, I’ll always be grateful. When I first started attending, I had little to no desire to be on the worship team after getting fired from my previous church. I told God, myself, and my wife that I would only do it if I was personally asked. Most of the Second Chance staff were aware of the painful situation I was coming from, so when the former worship leader invited me to serve, I saw it as a small step toward healing. I didn’t want the platform. I was just trying to trust again. A couple of months later, I was quietly removed from the team. No conversation. No feedback. Just a phone call from the former worship leader saying they were “going in a different direction.” (His exact words.) Only later did I learn, through someone else on staff, that Perry Noble had personally requested I be taken off the team due to my “stage presence.” No one ever spoke to me about it. Not Perry, and not the worship leader. There was no acknowledgment from either of them that this might have been especially painful, even though they knew my story. I was simply told not to come to Wednesday practice anymore. Looking back, that was a time when what I needed most was kindness and real pastoral care. I needed to know that someone saw where I was and was willing to walk with me through it. What I experienced instead was a silent dismissal during a time when I was already trying to heal. Unfortunately, I have come to see that this kind of quiet removal is not uncommon in churches that value excellence over intimacy. But it is especially painful when it happens in a place that claims to offer second chances. I'm not trying to cancel this church. I'm not saying they're bad or that you shouldn't go. I'm just sharing my experience in case it helps someone feel less alone, and in hopes that it encourages more care. So, to those reading this who know what it is like to be quietly pushed aside, you are not the only one. It is okay to admit that it hurt. You are not overreacting. What you experienced was real, and it should not have been ignored. And to any leaders reading this, you do not have to keep everyone, and you do not have to say yes to every voice. But know this. When someone has been wounded by the Church, walking into any church again takes deep courage. The way you handle them in that moment can shape how they view God, leadership, and community going forward. Please do not make their healing harder than it already is.”
