You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Thank you to Travis and the rest of the staff for your assistance in navigating family dynamics following the sudden death of my father. My family would prefer that my father be buried soon despite the damage to the community from Hurricane Ida, but we understand that his spouse is in charge of making that decision. It is not a decision we approve of but have been able to accept that we are powerless over that timeline. We look forward to continuing to work with you to put him to rest peacefully which is what he expressed to us prior to his death. His widow has made the grieving process difficult as she had her family front and center as opposed to his family. At no time did she ever ask my family (particularly the family member that paid for his services) to sit in the front. It was all about her and her toxic family.”

“If all funeral homes had the compassionate, friendly & professional staff like the Samart Funeral Home does, death would be a tad less dreadful of a subject to embrace. The employees (Sarah, Mr. Jr. & Lane) I interacted with were exemplary! Sincere gratitude for taking care of my dad & our family.”

“Outrageous. When you are dealing with the loss of a loved one the last thing you should be worrying about is incompetence. My father just passed. As per his wishes we had his body cremated. Prior to that I made clear to Lane I was interested in a keep sake that made jewelry designs based on your loved one’s finger prints. He explained the process & how the digital image would be sent to a third party company that actually crafted the pieces. That I’d be sent a link... I asked if it was possible to have the image sent to tattoo artists. He didn’t make any promises about that but said it shouldn’t be too difficult & that he’d help me with it. He calls & leaves a message without details. I call back & Lane explains to me a situation I was already aware of regarding my mom picking up dad’s ashes; it was a complete non sequitor & unsolicited unnecessary information. So I asked my specific question about dad’s finger scan. He nervously tossed out that a “system crashed & we didn’t get the file but your dad’s ashes have been picked up by your mom. Thanks bye!” I had to stop him & press him on what he just told me. I confirmed the keepsake I wanted most, the way I wanted to finally & permanently memorialize my father would not be possible because he failed to have any kind of fail safes or double checking or confirmation that before a body was destroyed to ashes a checklist would be completed of all the requests made of the family & deceased. Seriously these guys had one job. They provided funerary & memorial services. Simply because they don’t have the most basic tool of any job- a gawd damn CHECKLIST they have ruined this literally tragic precious final moments when my family is at our most vulnerable. That they flubbed my father’s memorial will always be the last footnote to a great man. They made no accommodations for their epic screwup & absolutely no apologies!!!! Not even an “I’m sorry”. That there was no acceptance of responsibility or any remorse whatsoever was as bad as the original screwup, maybe worse. At that point though, they already had my family’s many thousands of dollars we had already spent with them. If you have future arrangements with this company break em! PLEASE CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS THAN THIS PLACE and if you’re reading funeral home reviews, I am so sorry for your loss. xo”
