You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I waited to make this review, out of respect for my family, but it's time. This was a disaster. There was not a single piece of this that went well. They loaded my grandfather- rapidly- like a sack of potatoes, I was right at his head and just blown away by how carelessly he was moved. This was the beginning. Nothing was correct on the obituary, the prayer card or what was relayed to the church. My grandfather was a publicly known, incredible person, and this was truly an insult to his name and legacy. I truly suggest you seek another establishment for the care of your loved ones.”

“I have to clarify the false review above. The reviewer from "Home Care by Angel's " placed an order through a THIRD party website offered as a service to customers who are reading an obituary. There is no sham involved. It's a link that directs orders to a rotating list of florists. This particular order was received 15 minutes before the family was expected to arrive at the service. Most funeral homes require all orders to be delivered 3 to 4 hours before hand. We agreed to fill this order and deliver within minutes. As the arrangement in the first photo is not ours and we had to use the product available to us in a short amount of time, it was not designed exactly like the photo. The sunflower had just arrived and was not fully open. But normally opens within a couple hours. There IS a disclaimer which clearly states substitutions can be made. After delivering, I received a call stating he was embarrassed at how awful it was. We explained the above-mentioned and also that we went above and beyond to get the order delivered. We had closed an hour earlier. He continued to insult and said he was going to dispute the charge to his card. I explained that wouldn't be necessary we would cancel the order with disappointment as we felt in person it was beautiful. A refund was issued. Again, this is a third party who receives the order and payment and redirects to filling florist. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This review was unfairly written as Phalen funeral home has no involvement with the flower orders. They graciously accept and display them. In my experience the Directors have always treated clients with dignity and respect. I have been a florist for 25 years. I have never had reason to make negative comments regarding their customer service. In fact, I've witnessed a family business dedicated to compassionate professional, timely service no matter the circumstances or time of day or night.”

“My dad passed October 24, 2022 My siblings and I went to Phalen Funeral Home on October 25, 2022 and explained the situation to the owner and he laughed in our faces and acted as if the whole situation was a joke. Even after telling him our father passed less than 24 hours ago. He is rude, condescending, and heartless. DO NOT bring your loved ones here. I would not trust him handling any loved one who passed if he can’t even show respect to the people who are alive and grieving. I wouldn’t even give them one star. Get this business shut down.”
