You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This was one of the worse experiences I have ever had. Yesterday was my father-in-laws funeral and I will say, the service was embarrassing. I don't know if it was because it was not the typical funeral, just a memorial where everyone got together and talked with each other and shared memories, but the two gentlemen handling the service was less than professional. They barely greeted anyone who came in, they did not instruct family or friends to sign the funeral book, they didn't even know the family was present, even though they were sitting in the family reserved area. I had to go up to the gentlemen and ask for an obituary, to which in my opinion, they rudely said "Is the family representative here?". Well, you would have known he was there if you were paying attention to who was coming in, instead of having your own personal conversation. Again, in my opinion, just very rude all around. I have been to many funeral services done by May's and I feel like, if it were a church service, the service provided would have been %100 better. Another issue was, a family member went up to the front to say a few words and asked for a moment of silence, these two gentlemen again, having their own conversation, could be heard still talking while she was trying to talk. I took them a minute or so to even realize she was up there before they paused the music. One last issue that I though was unacceptable was, we asked for prayer cards which were not provided. Again, when asking the gentlemen about them, they informed us that we canceled them, we informed them we did no such thing. When asked if someone could look over the itemized statement, they told us, "well, you can look at your own and then call us". What kind of professional service was this. There was no empathy given what so ever, everything was cut short and with no regard to the family having one last moment with their father. From beginning to the end, this service was horrible. Thankfully, the family was able to come together and share memories with each other and not have to pay too much attention to this funeral homes shortcomings yesterday. This will be the last time we utilize their services. I'm pretty sure my review will be met with rebuttals, but this was the experience that we had.”

“Thank you for taking care of my Father. From the initial pickup call to the burial. Everything was done in a timely matter. we didn't have our love one waiting long. We said, give us an hour and Mays was there in an hour. Setting up the arrangements was a smooth process. Sorry, I can't remember the Gentlemens name, but he was very professional and answered all our questions. The communication was excellent. I was consistenly in communication with Taron. The process with him was very easy and reasurring. His response turn-around was very good. Even calling in, Rhonda was always pleasant and professional. everyone was easy to talk to. My father was layed out very nice. I was aked if everything was ok with my Father. I asked for a little adjustment with the makeup, but I was told why it looked that way. I love when someone can take their time and educate me on something I don't know. My Father was well groomed. Seeing my father at his service the adjustments were made and he looked great, peaceful. The flowers and my Dads casket were layed out nicely. My father was displayed so nicely. The directors did a great job keeping everything in order. At the gravesite, everything again was in order. Overall review is a 10. Thank you for making this difficult time a little lighter for my family. We entrusted your services and I have no regrets. We have recieved alot of compliments on how our Father looked. That was very import to us. Thank you”
