You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This place doesn’t even deserve one star, but I had to click on it so I could write this review. This funeral home is one of the worst businesses I’ve ever dealt with. The staff is incompetent and seem oblivious that they are being entrusted with a loved one’s remains. They thought my mother was going to be embalmed when I had just told them no embalming. They thought my family and I were there to pick out an urn, even though we said we just wanted her to be cremated. When we called to ask where they were in the process with my mother’s remains and death certificates they said the doctor hadn’t signed off on it so nothing could be done and it would be another 2 to 3 weeks before we would receive anything. That was strange because I was told 2 days prior to that phone call that the doctor had signed off on everything. When the staff realized things were about to get ugly, the death certificates as well as my mother’s remains were magically ready for pick up. The only thing I can say is the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. Avoid this business like the plague. No one deserves all the missteps my family has endured, especially while grieving a loss. I wish I could take that one star back.”

“I was very hopeful that my family's experience laying a loved one to rest would be comforting. That was the last thing we experienced. As my uncle's children were sobbing up at his casket, as they had literally not even 2 minutes prior seen him for the first time since his passing, a staff member very loudly came in to ensure the funeral home got paid and pulled my other loved ones away to sign cremation papers. We, as a family, hadn't been in the parlor for more than 5 minutes total before he came in. He didn't pull anyone aside to privacy or offer any condolences. It was immediately a business transaction and it was very clear, that was all this was to them. Then when I went to ask staff a question towards the end of the visitation, I was laughed at and made fun of. They also did not honor my family's wishes with body positioning.”

“Since It was the first time we were in need of funeral services, we didn’t know what to expect. Kutis in Affton was amazing. Scheduling the services was terrifying for my daughters and I. Dave was so very warm and welcoming. His compassion and patience for us and explaining all services and options was remarkable. The day of service was incredible. The whole staff was so ready to assist us, and any requests we made. My family and I still discuss how Kutis made this very sad occasion comfortable and memorable for us. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes out to Kutis.”
