You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“As a Rabbi, without hesitation I highly recommend the Louis Suburban funeral home. It is run by Richard Louis who exemplifies the meaning of mentch. The warmth, sensitivity and compassion are what every grieving family can depend on and take comfort in. My brother recently decided to preplan and without hesitation he will be calling Richard. In my humble opinion only a family owned funeral home can truly treat their clientele as family.”

“Funerals are always painful, and all one can hope for is compassion and understanding when going through the funeral process. This was the first time we worked with them, and we were more than happy with their service. Our uncle's time had come, and it was difficult for all of us, but Cristy Ann went above and beyond in helping us through this process. She was incredibly compassionate and took the time to understand our relationship with our uncle. She made sure every detail was covered, including driving us by our Uncle house on the way to the cemetery. She also made sure a military honor guard was there so he could be buried like all veterans should. We are forever grateful for the grace and professionalism she displayed throughout the process and highly recommend Louis Suburban Chapel.”

“1. Only gave me 30 minutes for my mom’s funeral, and continuously pressured the family and the guest to rush into the service. For example, the director told my guests not to sign the guest book to hurry them. They scheduled another funeral for the time they pressured me not to take when I was arranging the funeral. 2. Carelessly shoved my mom’s old photos into a bag with water. I believe this was also to hurry us out. An old 1960s picture was damaged. 3. Put my guests life in danger by improperly directing traffic, and almost causing a car collision. 4. Hidden Fee: unlike most other funeral homes the grave digging fee (up to $3000) is not included in the prices. This makes the place look less expensive when in a hurry, while in reality being significantly more expensive.”
