You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“It feels very strange to be reviewing a funeral home, but here we are. I was impressed when I had heard that Fisher is independent and has been family owned for generations, so I thought I would take a chance on them and go through them after my grandmother passed. Let me just say that I'm so glad they did. Each staff member I met with was very professional, yet still warm and comforting– as was the atmosphere itself. They answered each of my questions and I never felt pressured to decide anything immediately upon asked. Nobody wants to think about expenses when someone passes, but it's the unfortunate reality that we all face right away. Fisher was by far the most reasonably priced, professional, and caring that I could ever imagine a funeral home being. I don't look forward to dealing with them again in the future, because of the nature of meeting itself, but I know I will be in very good hands when I do.”

“I am so very outraged and extremely disappointed in how Fisher funeral home has dealt with the transferring of a family member, or shall I say lack thereof. I was helping a family member with the process of funeral arrangements and we requested fisher release the body to another funeral home. After "paying" the fees to do so, they refused to release the death certificates to the other funeral home then called my relative and convinced them to stay with them! I didn't know what was happening until I pieced the stories together after several back and forth phone calls. They lied about what truly took place all to keep business at a whopping $1000+ extra. This caused so much unnecessary pain, grief, and torment to my family. I personally know both funeral directors at these places with the caveat of knowing fisher's director my entire life. I am so hurt and appalled to be treated with such lack of care and to know there's no respect or care for us, just money and business. Just so y'all know, Fisher was bought out by a mega corporation and no longer see you as a human dealing with the loss of a loved one, just as a dollar sign. I will never recommend Fisher to anyone again. They aren't who they used to be. They charge an arm and a leg for services that one can barely afford to begin with. They also charge a huge after hours fee on top of funeral costs. It's sooooo expensive it's almost unattainable. Their customer service isn't the greatest either. One individual who answers the phone answers in such a way it makes you wish you were the dead person. No pitches, no care, no vibrations in the voice, nothing. Just monotone. I don't hear compassion or sorrow in their voice at all. It's completely awful. One other thing I should mention, my relative that passed is a military vet as well. I'm pissed they would dishonor our servicemembers and their families in this way. I wish Fisher never sold their soul to the devil.”

“I was so heartbroken over the handling of my Mother’s cremation. There was a written request they had to have a lock of hair clipped and given to us before her cremation. They stated that they simply forgot. Nothing could or was even offered to make it right. We were also assured that her ashes would be ready in a week. We were not contacted for three weeks. This was another heartbreak to add to an already excruciating time.”
