You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My neighbor and basically second mom had her dog die unexpectedly this morning.... the staff were very kind and VERY helpful when it came to directions and helping us out through this difficult process.... let us have time with Scrappy before taking her away, let us know in good detail how to get to the pet cemetery portion of Roselawn. Genuinely thank you for helping us out, Scrappy was her whole world and this helped her so much.”

“We have used Roselawn for our pet services for over 15 years and before, you used to go to the main building, speak to a director, and get a very personal and dignified transfer of remains. Now some voice on an intercom sends you to the back of the cemetery - straight to the furnace - and a guy in jeans and a hoodie comes up to your window and asks "how can I help you?". No condolences, just very unempathetic and devoid of any emotion. It felt like we interrupted lunchtime so we needed to get this over with. Downhill Roselawn, downhill. I wont take my pets here anymore, they deserve better. Montgomery and Steward is down the street and costs almost half as much.”

“I can’t say enough about John. He was absolutely amazing to deal with during the extremely hard times of one of our (fur) babies passing away. He was very kind and compassionate during the process and then when I went to pick up the ashes of our fur baby, he had made the paw print Impression. We had no idea we were going to receive that so it was a very special surprise. John is definitely a very caring person and It’s very passionate and what he does, Thank you so much, John for your compassion during the difficult times. Would definitely recommend! (John only works on the weekends)”
