You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“The entire staff, starting with Sarah, made our family's experience extra special. Sarah kept in constant contact with us and guided us through the entire process. She was extremely sensitive to all of our needs making sure we were happy every step of the way. We had a very full turnout at the funeral home and we never felt that they were rushing us along. They were also with us every step of the way during the Mass and the service at the cemetery. I would highly recommend the services of the Russell Boyle Funeral Home.”

“While driving on a busy street attempting to locate the post office me and my partner were ushered in to their parking lot. At first I was grateful we didn't have to make a three point turn in traffic but was soon shocked that the man standing outside began to berate us and told us to have a lousy day. If that is how something as quick and simple as someone turning around in a parking lot is handled, I can not begin to imagine how something as delicate and complicated as funeral services are managed. Truly rude and unkind for no discernible reason.”

“After trying to do a 3 point turn on the road I was ushered into the parking lot by one of the attendants when I turned to leave I was stopped by the staff here and they were extremely rude and unfriendly. They told me to have a lousy day after they were the ones that invited me into the lot. I never spoke to the staff with any disrespect but they were very rude to me. Unfortunately I do have someone in my family that's very ill and I will be needing funeral and cremation services for them soon but I know I won't be using them. I would not recommend the services to anyone as I would not want my grieving loved ones to deal with such unkind people.”
